Description
Bernard Chatelet, also known as Máscara Negra, is a fictional character from the manga The Rose of Versailles by Riyoko Ikeda, appearing across its various anime adaptations. He is a committed journalist and social agitator who leads a double life as the enigmatic thief known as the Black Knight, a symbol of popular resistance against the French nobility.
Born in 1760 as the illegitimate son of a nobleman and a commoner, Bernard's early life was marked by rejection and tragedy. At the age of five, he was cast out by his father, plunging him and his mother into misery. Desperate, his mother attempted a suicide that only he survived, an experience that cemented a deep and lasting hatred for the aristocratic class. This painful past fuels his core motivation: to defend the oppressed and fight against the nobility, whom he views as absolutely evil. His worldview is defined by a stark division between the common people, who represent good, and the aristocracy, who represent evil.
In terms of personality, Bernard is passionate, determined, and idealistic, though his convictions can make him appear radical and sometimes excessively harsh. His hatred for the nobility is a visceral force that guides nearly all his decisions and moral judgments. Despite this intensity, he is also capable of showing tenderness, especially towards those he seeks to protect. As a journalist for the newspaper Le Vue Cordélie, he has a talent for inflammatory speech and mass persuasion, using his skills to rally the people. As the Black Knight, he is an agile thief and clandestine leader, stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
Bernard's role in the story is deeply intertwined with the revolutionary movement leading up to the fall of the Bastille. His path crosses significantly with Oscar François de Jarjayes, the captain of the Royal Guard. After a series of robberies, Bernard is captured by Oscar. However, upon learning of the harsh realities faced by commoners, Oscar chooses to release him on the condition that he abandon his life of crime. In a notable gesture, Oscar even entrusts the care of Rosalie Lamorliere to him. This act of understanding from a member of the nobility he so despises creates a complex dynamic of rivalry, admiration, and conflict between Bernard and Oscar.
The most important relationship in Bernard's life is with Rosalie Lamorliere. In the anime adaptation, Rosalie, having lost her adoptive mother, comes to live with Bernard. Moved by her tragedy and shared hardships, Bernard falls in love with her. The two eventually marry, finding in each other a partner both in life and in their revolutionary cause. Although Rosalie continues to idolize Oscar, Bernard accepts this, focusing on caring for her.
Bernard undergoes significant personal development, evolving from a figure driven purely by vengeance to one who finds a personal stake in the future through his love for Rosalie. His revolutionary fervor remains, but it becomes tempered by his human connections. This development continues in the sequel manga, La gloire de Napoléon - Eroica, where he and his friend Alain de Soisson attempt to assassinate Napoleon Bonaparte. The plot fails, leading to a tragic end for both men. Even then, his deep-seated hatred for authority figures persists, as he coldly views the unjust execution of the Duke d’Enghien as merely one less aristocrat in the world.
Regarding his abilities, Bernard is a skilled and persuasive journalist, adept at using his pen to inflame public opinion. As the Black Knight, he demonstrates remarkable agility, stealth, and ingenuity as a thief and underground leader. He is also known for his stirring speeches, with one of his most famous rallying cries being, Take up arms, citizens! Let us defend Paris!. The character of Bernard Chatelet is based on Camille Desmoulins, a prominent agitator and journalist of the French Revolution.
