Description
Alm Öhi, also called Alm Onji or the Alm Uncle, is the paternal grandfather of the titular character Heidi in the anime Heidi, Girl of the Alps. He lives a solitary and secluded life in a small mountain hut high above the village of Dörfli in the Swiss Alps, accompanied only by his loyal St. Bernard dog, Josef, an animal companion created specifically for the anime adaptation. The villagers regard him with a mixture of fear and suspicion, fueled by persistent rumors that he killed a man in his youth. This reputation, along with the grief of having outlived his son Tobias and his daughter in law Adelheid, Heidi's parents, has driven him to a life of self imposed isolation, earning him the local nickname that translates to Alps Uncle.

His personality is initially defined by his gruff, stern, and deeply misanthropic demeanor. He is perceived by the outside world as a bitter, godless, and harsh individual who wants nothing to do with society. This is evident when his granddaughter Heidi is brought to him by her aunt Dete. He is reluctant and resistant to the idea of becoming a guardian, refusing to take on any familial responsibility. However, Heidi's innate cheerfulness, curiosity, intelligence, and unconditional affection gradually begin to break down his emotional barriers. Her enthusiasm for the simple mountain life and her unwavering kindness slowly soften his harsh exterior, forging a deep and transformative bond between them. He evolves from a reluctant caretaker into a deeply devoted and patient mentor, teaching Heidi about the ways of the mountains, the care of the goats, and the practical skills needed for their self sufficient life.

His core motivation shifts over the course of the story. Initially, his primary drive is to maintain his solitude and distance himself from the village and its judgmental inhabitants. He sustains himself through his own skills, crafting wooden bowls and utensils to trade for essentials and tending his goats for milk and cheese. When he accepts Heidi, his motivation becomes her well being, though he expresses this through quiet acts of care rather than words. This protectiveness is fiercely demonstrated when Dete returns to take Heidi to Frankfurt to be a companion for a wealthy, wheelchair bound girl named Clara Sesemann. He vehemently opposes the plan, but Dete ultimately tricks the trusting Heidi into leaving, which leaves Alm Öhi visibly shaken and emotionally devastated, retreating further into his solitude as he awaits her return.

Alm Öhi plays a crucial role as the anchor of Heidi's world. His deep connection to the alpine environment provides the stable and loving home from which Heidi's adventures spring and to which she desperately longs to return. After her severe homesickness forces her return from Frankfurt, his character undergoes a significant and deliberate development. Recognizing that Heidi has learned to read and would benefit from an education, he makes the profound decision to temporarily leave his beloved mountain hut. He restores a dilapidated house in the village of Dörfli so that Heidi can attend school during the harsh winter months. This act marks his first major step toward reintegrating into the community he had rejected for so long. He begins to interact more with the villagers, who in turn start to see past his fearsome reputation. He even mentors the young goatherd Peter, teaching him carpentry skills and helping him build a sled to win a local race.

His most notable relationship is, of course, with Heidi, who brings light and purpose back into his life. He shares a quiet but profound bond with his dog Josef, who remains a constant companion. His relationship with Peter evolves from gruff tolerance to genuine, if teasing, mentorship. When Clara Sesemann comes to visit the Alps in hopes of improving her health, Alm Öhi proves to be instrumental in her recovery. He shows unexpected gentleness and patience, actively participating in her physical therapy by devising exercises using the natural terrain of the mountain. He consoles her during her struggles and encourages her every small success. This demonstration of his deep wisdom and care earns him the complete trust of Clara's grandmother, who places the girl under his charge. Through these actions, Alm Öhi completes his transformation from a reclusive, mistrusted outcast to a respected and integral member of the mountain community.

Notable abilities and skills are central to his character. He is a highly skilled craftsman, capable of building and repairing furniture, tools, and even restoring an entire house. He is an expert in traditional alpine subsistence, including cheese making, goat herding, and woodworking, all of which he passes on to Heidi. His knowledge of the mountain environment is extensive; he can predict weather changes, navigate treacherous paths, and understand the behavior of the local wildlife. This practical wisdom and deep connection to the land are the foundations of his identity and the source of the quiet strength that defines him.
