Description
Pierre, also known as Peter in the original Japanese version, is the young goatherd who lives in the village below the Alm, the high mountain pasture where Heidi comes to live with her grandfather. He is one of the first people Heidi meets after she settles in the Alps, and he quickly becomes her closest friend on the mountain. Every day he gathers the village goats, including the animals owned by Heidi's grandfather, and drives them up to the grazing grounds, where Heidi often joins him during the day.
Pierre comes from a poor mountain family. He lives with his mother Brigitte and his grandmother, an elderly blind woman who is dear to him and later also to Heidi. His life is bound to the rhythms of the Alpine pasture, and his daily work as goatherd keeps him outdoors in all seasons. He is a boy of simple circumstances, with no interest in the wider world beyond his mountain.
In personality, Pierre is straightforward and a little rough in manner, like many children raised in an isolated mountain setting.
