Description
Arbormon is a fictional character from the anime Digimon Frontier, serving as one of the primary antagonists for a significant portion of the series. He is the successor to the Ten Legendary Warriors and holds the title of the Warrior of Wood, wielding the Spirits of Wood left behind by the ancient Digimon AncientTroiamon. His physical form is that of a Human Hybrid, resembling a wooden android or a karakuri puppet, which gives him a distinct, archaic, and somewhat inscrutable appearance due to his lack of facial expressions.
In terms of personality, Arbormon is characterized by simplicity and a tendency to follow his own desires, which often revolve around sloth and gluttony. He is notably slow-moving and spends much of his time either seeking out food or sleeping, yet this lazy demeanor belies a capacity for excessive cruelty when provoked, making him a dangerous opponent when cornered. Despite his low intelligence and simple-minded nature, he can be surprisingly cunning in battle, utilizing tricky maneuvers and strategies. A peculiar and recurring trait is his habit of seemingly randomly offering advice for a good life, such as recommending that one brush their teeth after waking up.
Arbormon’s primary motivation for most of the series stems from his role as a corrupted servant of Cherubimon, the fallen Celestial Digimon. Alongside fellow warriors Grumblemon, Ranamon, and Mercurymon, he is subverted by Cherubimon and fights to collect data and defeat the human children, the DigiDestined, to further his master's goals for the Digital World. A key personal motivation for him is his fierce loyalty to his allies; his primary goal in one of his major confrontations is to avenge Grumblemon after his companion loses his Beast Spirit.
His role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist who directly engages the DigiDestined on multiple occasions. He participates in a raid on Seraphimon's Castle and later chases the children through a secret passage, using his Beast form, Petaldramon, to stall them. In another instance, his gluttonous nature takes over, and as Petaldramon, he terrorizes Hamburger Village, kidnapping a Burgermon chef to satisfy his cravings for hamburgers. His final confrontation occurs in the Continent of Darkness, where he single-handedly takes on all five of the main child characters.
Arbormon has key relationships with his fellow Legendary Warriors. He works in concert with Grumblemon, Ranamon, and Mercurymon, showing a notable sense of camaraderie, particularly with Grumblemon. He is a loyal, if simple, servant to Cherubimon, who tasks him with eliminating the DigiDestined. His most pivotal relationship, however, is with Duskmon, the Warrior of Darkness. After Arbormon is defeated by the DigiDestined and his Beast Spirit is scanned, he pleads for help from Duskmon, referring to him as a friend. In a moment of cruel betrayal, Duskmon deems him a useless liability and kills him, scanning his remaining Human Spirit data.
Arbormon undergoes a significant development after his death. He is later purified, and his Digi-Egg appears in the Village of Beginnings when the Royal Knights attack. For the first time, his astral form stands alongside the other nine purified Legendary Warriors, including his former enemies, to protect the children of the future. In this moment of redemption, the Warriors acknowledge those who defeated them, and Arbormon’s Digi-Egg joins the others in atoning for their past actions.
Notable abilities stem from his connection to wood and plants. As Arbormon, his attacks include the Roundhouse Punt, also known as Machine Gun Dance, where his limbs extend on cables to punch and kick opponents from a distance, and the Blockade Seed, where he fires a seed-like bomb from his mouth. He also has a great connection to flora, using plants and trees to regenerate from significant damage. He can slide evolve into his Beast form, Petaldramon, a giant plant-lizard hybrid that represents his raw power. In this form, he can fire a cyclone of leaves from his nostrils called Leaf Cyclone and use Thorn Jab to stab his tail into the ground, causing vines to erupt and entangle his foes. Petaldramon possesses a massive appetite and can grow in size, strength, and regenerative ability by devouring surrounding trees and vegetation. While his wooden skin is fireproof, his internal joints remain vulnerable to fire-based attacks.
