Description
Henry Wong, known in the original Japanese version as Jianliang Lee, is a central character in the Digimon Tamers anime and serves as the calm and thoughtful counterpart to his more impulsive friends. He is the partner of the Digimon Terriermon and is recognized for his strong pacifist principles and strategic mind.
Henry is a boy of mixed heritage, being half-Chinese and half-Japanese. His father is Chinese and his mother is Japanese, and he lives with them along with his older brother Rinchei, older sister Jaarin, and younger sister Suzie, which places him as the third-born child in the family. His father, Janyu, plays a significant role in the story as one of the Monster Makers, the group of programmers who originally created the Digimon. At home, Henry is a protective older brother, particularly towards his younger sister Suzie, and often shows a responsible and caring side to his family.
Henry is defined by a personality that is markedly mature, levelheaded, and introverted for his age. His most defining trait is his pacifism; he deeply dislikes fighting and believes that Digimon should be friends, not used for battle. This perspective is rooted in a past incident from his childhood. When he was younger and just beginning to learn martial arts, he used his skills to injure another boy, an action he came to regret profoundly. This guilt was compounded when he received a Digimon video game from his father. He chose Terriermon as his in-game partner and pushed him to digivolve to his Champion form, Gargomon, to fight a Gorillamon. Gargomon lost control and was severely hurt, causing Henry to cry over the suffering of what he thought was just data. This emotional wish for things to be different caused a mysterious Blue Card to appear, which transformed his card reader into a D-Power and brought a real, injured Terriermon into the real world and into his arms. As a result, Henry initially refuses to let Terriermon fight or absorb another Digimon's data, promising never to make him battle again.
Despite his pacifist nature, Henry is not weak-willed. He is highly intelligent, a good strategist, and often acts as the voice of reason for the group of Tamers, mediating between Takato's emotional impulsiveness and Rika's stubborn aggression. Over the course of the story, his motivation evolves from avoiding conflict at all costs to understanding that fighting is sometimes necessary to protect the lives of others, a lesson he learns after a battle with a rogue Digimon named Musyamon. This realization helps him find a balance, though he remains a fundamentally non-aggressive person who prefers logical solutions.
In the story, Henry's role is that of the anchor and the planner. He is one of the three primary Tamers, alongside Takato Matsuki and Rika Nonaka, who form the core group defending the real world from wild Digimon and, later, the D-Reaper. He becomes good friends with Takato quickly, often helping him deal with problems caused by his secret Digimon partner, Guilmon. His calm demeanor provides stability during chaotic battles, and his ability to analyze situations makes him an effective tactician in combat. Henry is also the first of the group to contact the Digital World and the first to make his Digimon digivolve, though initially by accident.
Henry's key relationships are central to his character development. His bond with his partner, Terriermon, is one of deep care and mutual respect. Terriermon has a laid-back personality and often uses the Cantonese phrase "Moumantai" (or "Momentai"), meaning "no problem," to encourage Henry to relax. Henry's relationship with his father is also important, as he learns about the true origins of Digimon and works alongside the Monster Makers to find a solution to the D-Reaper threat. His protective instincts are most visible with his little sister Suzie, whom he initially tries to shield entirely from the dangers of being a Tamer, an effort that becomes complicated when Suzie gains her own partner Digimon, Lopmon.
Henry undergoes significant development as the series progresses. He moves from a guilt-ridden pacifist who denies the necessity of combat to a confident Tamer who accepts that fighting can be a form of protection. This maturity culminates in his ability to achieve Matrix Evolution, or Bio-Merge, with Terriermon. When the need to protect his sister and friends becomes absolute, he and Terriermon fuse together to become the Mega-level Digimon, MegaGargomon. In this form, Henry's own training in Tai Chi, which he practices alongside his father, directly influences their combat style, allowing the massive, heavily armed Digimon to move with the grace and skill of a martial artist.
Henry is also notable for his abilities outside of Digivolution. He is not an avid card game player like Takato, but he is highly skilled with computers and video games. His intelligence and logical thinking make him a natural problem-solver. However, his most unique ability is perhaps his hidden depth of emotion; beneath his calm exterior, he is as prone to self-blame and guilt as his more expressive friend Takato, a vulnerability that makes his eventual confidence more earned.
