Description
Antylamon is an Ultimate-level Digimon that takes the form of a large, humanoid rabbit and serves as one of the twelve Devas, a group of powerful beings who act as servants to the Digimon Sovereigns. Within the hierarchy of the Digital World, Antylamon is specifically associated with the Sovereign Zhuqiaomon, tasked with guarding the southern gate to that ruler's palace. Known in Japan as Antiramon, its name derives from Anteira or Aṇḍīra, one of the Twelve Heavenly Warriors from Buddhist mythology.
In terms of personality, Antylamon stands apart from most other Devas due to a fundamentally gentle and compassionate nature. This Digimon possesses a particular fondness for small or vulnerable creatures and tends to them with profound tenderness. However, this gentle disposition has a notable trigger: if any threat appears that would harm those under its protection, Antylamon's personality undergoes a complete reversal. In such moments of righteous anger, it becomes ferocious and relentless, transforming its hands into razor-sharp axes to attack without mercy until the enemy is destroyed.
The primary motivation that drives Antylamon throughout its appearance in Digimon Tamers is a shift from loyalty to its sovereign to a personal bond with a human child. Initially, Antylamon faithfully carries out its duty as a Deva, guarding the assigned gate. This changes upon meeting a young girl named Suzie Wong. Rather than attacking the human as other Devas might, Antylamon forms an unexpected friendship with her. When a fellow Deva, Makuramon, attempts to harm Suzie, Antylamon intervenes and drives him away, directly defying the Sovereign's apparent will. This act of protection costs Antylamon dearly, as Zhuqiaomon punishes the transgression by stripping away its power and reverting it to its Rookie form, Lopmon. After this transformation, Lopmon becomes Suzie's partner Digimon, and the character's motivation evolves to serving and protecting the human child in this new capacity.
Regarding key relationships, the most significant is the bond between Antylamon and Suzie Wong. Their connection begins when Antylamon is still a Deva guarding the southern gate, and Suzie, the younger sister of Tamer Henry Wong, wanders into the area. The Deva shows patience and care toward the child, and the friendship that develops leads directly to Antylamon's defection from the Devas. After being transformed into Lopmon, this relationship becomes a proper Tamer-partner dynamic. Antylamon also has a notable antagonistic relationship with Makuramon, another Deva, whom it fights to protect Suzie. As a subordinate of Zhuqiaomon, Antylamon exists within a hierarchy of power that it ultimately rejects when choosing to protect a human over following its sovereign's commands.
The character undergoes a significant development arc, beginning as a loyal servant of the Sovereigns and a guardian of the Digital World's gates. After befriending Suzie and being punished by Zhuqiaomon, Antylamon is reduced to its Rookie form, Lopmon, and must adapt to life as a Tamer's partner in the human world. Later in the series, during the battle against the D-Reaper in the real world, Lopmon regains the ability to evolve back into Antylamon, demonstrating that the bond with its Tamer has restored the power that was taken away. In this evolved form, Antylamon participates directly in the final battles, including an encounter with the creature known as Horn Striker, where it uses its strength to grab the enemy's tail and enable another Digimon, Justimon, to land a finishing blow.
Notable abilities of Antylamon center on its combat prowess and unique physical traits. It can freely manipulate the ki or qi energy flowing within its body, allowing it to move with fluid grace or deliver heavy, iron-like blows as the situation demands. Its signature attack is the Bunny Blades, also known as Treasure Axe or Asipatravana, which transforms its hands into glowing, crescent-shaped blades of pink energy capable of slicing through enemies and projecting energy slashes at range. Another known technique is the Mantra Chant, or Arm Bomber, a psychic shockwave attack released from both sides of its body. Additionally, Antylamon possesses excellent hearing, thanks to its large rabbit-like ears, making it highly aware of its surroundings. One final ability, Meditation Cure, allows it to recover from any kind of damage almost instantly. It is worth noting that across different appearances in the Digimon franchise, the character's gender has been portrayed inconsistently, with the original Japanese version of Digimon Tamers using gender-neutral language that led to some uncertainty, while the English dub presents Antylamon as female.
