TV-Series
Description
Jianliang Lee, often called Jian for short, is one of the three primary human protagonists in his series. He is the partner of the Digimon Terriermon. Jianliang is a boy of mixed Chinese and Japanese heritage, and he is the third of four children, with an older brother, an older sister, and a younger sister named Shaochung. His father is Chinese and his mother is Japanese. Jianliang is a student of Tai Chi, a martial art he studies alongside his father, and his practice of it is a significant aspect of his character.

Jianliang is known for his exceptionally calm, level-headed, and pacifistic nature, which makes him seem much more mature than most boys his age. His deep-seated aversion to fighting stems from a specific incident in his past. When he was younger and first learning martial arts, he lost his temper in an argument with another child and, using his Tai Chi skills, seriously injured that child. This event caused him to deeply regret his loss of control, and he thereafter devoted himself to practicing self-restraint, fearing he might hurt someone else if he were to let his emotions get the better of him again. This background is the root of his quiet, responsible, and soft-spoken demeanor. He is also highly intelligent and thoughtful, often acting as the voice of reason and the primary strategist within the group of Tamers.

Jianliang obtained his partner Terriermon before his friends Takato and Rika acquired their own Digimon. While playing a Digimon computer game, his in-game partner, Terriermon, was badly defeated. Feeling remorse for the digital creature, he began to cry, and in that moment, a Blue Card he had was swiped through his card reader, transforming it into a D-Ark and causing Terriermon to materialize from the game into his arms. Traumatized by the pain he felt he had caused to the Digimon in the game, Jianliang made a solemn promise to Terriermon that he would never force him to fight again and kept him hidden, even making him pretend to be a stuffed animal so his family would not discover him. His core motivation throughout the early part of his journey is to protect his partner from violence. He struggles to reconcile his pacifist beliefs with the reality that, as a Digimon Tamer, fighting is sometimes necessary to protect his friends and innocent people. His role in the story often involves him being the cautious and reluctant fighter, needing to be convinced that a particular battle is morally justified before he will engage. Over time, he learns that some fights are indeed worth fighting and begins to accept his responsibilities as a Tamer more fully.

Jianliang has several key relationships that define his character arc. He becomes fast friends with Takato Matsuki after helping him with his partner, Guilmon, and their friendship is a central pillar of the series. He forms a more strained but ultimately strong bond with Rika Nonaka, as his calm and restrained personality initially clashes with her aggressive and battle-hungry nature. His relationship with his younger sister, Suzie, is also very important; he is extremely protective of her and often forbids her from following him into dangerous situations. Suzie later becomes a Tamer herself, partnered with Lopmon, Terriermon's twin Digimon. His relationship with his own partner, Terriermon, is deeply caring. Where Jianliang is serious and cautious, Terriermon is playful and optimistic, often telling Jianliang to relax and not worry, using the phrase "momentai".

Jianliang undergoes significant development. He starts as a boy so haunted by a past mistake that he refuses to let his partner fight at all, even going so far as to prevent Terriermon from absorbing the data of hostile Digimon that other Tamers have defeated. A pivotal moment occurs when he realizes that refusing to fight can have dire consequences, such as when a small child was nearly killed by a wild Digimon because he hesitated. This forces him to understand that pacifism in all circumstances is not a viable option and that there is a difference between senseless violence and necessary combat. He learns to strike a balance, becoming a more confident and capable Tamer while still retaining his core non-aggressive principles. By the climax of the series, he has grown enough to achieve Biomerge Digivolution with Terriermon, fusing with his partner to become the powerful MegaGargomon and facing world-ending threats like the D-Reaper.

Jianliang possesses several notable abilities beyond his role as a Digimon Tamer. He is highly proficient in Tai Chi, which he incorporates into his Digi-Modify technique; while other Tamers simply swipe cards, his movements are performed with the quick, patterned gestures characteristic of Chinese martial arts. His martial arts training directly influences the combat style of MegaGargomon when he is biomerged with Terriermon. He is also very knowledgeable about computers and networks, frequently scanning for information on Digimon activity and displaying skills that could be described as those of a hacker. As a Tamer, his strategic mind is his greatest asset. He is careful and analytical, preferring to assess a situation thoroughly before taking action, which makes him an excellent planner in battle, even if it sometimes leads to hesitation.
