Description
Janyu "Tao" Lee is a supporting character in Digimon Tamers. He is the father of Jianliang Lee, also known as Henry, and Shaochung Lee, also known as Suzie, and is married to Mayumi Lee. In his youth, Janyu was a student at Palo Alto University where he joined a group led by Rob McCoy. This group, which called itself the Wild Bunch or the Monster Makers, conducted experiments to create artificial life. Within this circle, Janyu used the codename Tao. His specific area of expertise was communication language. The group's work was ultimately successful, leading to the creation of what would become known as Digimon. However, their funding was withdrawn and the project was frozen. Unbeknownst to the Monster Makers, their digital creations migrated to an electronic parallel reality known as the Digital World, where they continued to evolve on their own.
Janyu is portrayed as a calm, polite, and accepting individual. When a popular franchise of video games, card games, and an anime series based on his and his colleagues' work was created without giving them any credit, he took the situation in stride and even purchased the video game for his son. As an adult, Janyu works in computer technology development for a large firm in Japan, which eventually brings him into contact with the secret government organization Hypnos.
Janyu's role in the story becomes critical as real Digimon begin to appear in the real world. His son, Henry, discovers a mysterious Blue Card and, knowing of his father's past, asks for help. Janyu scans the card and is shocked to find the digital signature of his former colleague, Shibumi, who had continued working on the Digimon project in secret. When Janyu accidentally witnesses a battle between Digimon in a park and is injured by a fireball from Impmon, he is forced to fully explain his past involvement with the creation of Digimon to Henry. Shortly thereafter, he is recruited by Hypnos's leader, Mitsuo Yamaki, to help the organization understand and destroy the Digimon that are appearing. Janyu struggles with this role, as he does not wish to see the creatures he helped create be destroyed, especially the partners of the children, known as Tamers. He directly opposes Yamaki's use of the Juggernaut, a weapon that would eliminate all Digimon in the real world, and uses his martial arts skills to physically intervene.
His key relationships are central to his character. As a father, he has a deep bond with his son Henry, though he is often secretive, trying to protect him and his wife from the dangerous truths he uncovers. This secrecy causes a rift with his wife, Mayumi, when their daughter Suzie is also pulled into the Digital World. He collaborates closely with his old Monster Maker colleagues, including Dolphin and the reclusive Shibumi, as well as with Yamaki, whose goals shift from eradication to coexistence. Throughout the series, Janyu provides critical technical support to the Tamers, helping to devise a way to communicate with them in the Digital World and building an "Ark" to bring them back to the real world.
Janyu undergoes significant development, transitioning from a man trying to keep his past a secret to an active participant in a desperate battle. His most profound moment of growth comes during the final conflict with the D-Reaper, a malevolent program that threatens both worlds. Believing it to be the only way to achieve a victory, Janyu secretly uploads the Juggernaut program into Henry's partner, Terriermon, without his son's knowledge. While the plan succeeds in defeating the D-Reaper, it also forces the partner Digimon to revert to their in-training forms and be pulled back into the Digital World, separating them from the Tamers. A tearful Janyu is forced to explain his actions and the heartbreaking sacrifice to his son, a moment that visibly shatters his usual calm demeanor and shows the immense emotional cost of his decisions. His notable abilities include a high level of intelligence and expertise in computer programming and communication systems, as well as proficiency in martial arts.
