Description
Grag is a fictional character from the Captain Future series, originally created by author Edmond Hamilton. He is a robot and one of the three Futuremen, the loyal companions and aides to the hero Curt Newton, who is known as Captain Future. Grag was constructed in the isolated Moon Laboratory by the brilliant scientists Roger Newton, Captain Future’s father, and Professor Simon Wright, who is later known as the Brain. As the first significant artificial life form created by the two scientists, Grag can be considered a prototype or precursor to the android Otho, who was created later.
Standing over seven feet tall, Grag is a colossal figure constructed from an inert metal that makes him nearly indestructible. His immense strength is legendary within the solar system, powered by an atomic energy source located deep within his chest. Grag serves as the brawn of the Futuremen, often using his superhuman physical power to overcome obstacles that no ordinary being could survive. For example, he once held up a mass of falling stone to allow Captain Future to escape being crushed, an act that resulted in Grag himself being buried and left with a large weld-scar on his back. On another occasion, he walked for days along the bottom of a Venusian ocean to reach an island where his companions were imprisoned, a feat made possible because his robotic nature requires no breathing apparatus. He has also survived being cast adrift in space for many days, needing no food or air, until he was rescued.
Beyond his physical capabilities, Grag possesses a considerable scientific knowledge base, reflecting the intellect of his creators. In some interpretations, he is portrayed as a technical practitioner who plays a key role in maintaining equipment and solving scientific problems for the team. His primary job during Curt Newton’s childhood was to keep the boy safe, a duty he continues to perform with unwavering dedication long after Curt has grown into Captain Future. He also keeps a small Moon Dog or Moon Hound named Yiek (sometimes spelled Eek) as a pet, which shows a more nurturing side to his character.
Personality is a core aspect of Grag’s character. His greatest and most defining ambition is to be considered human. This desire makes him a deeply sincere and often serious figure, as he strives to understand and emulate human emotions and behaviors. However, he has no sense of humor as humans understand it and is frequently puzzled by the jokes of Captain Future or the sly drollery of his fellow Futureman, Otho. This lack of humor and his earnest nature make him an easy target for Otho, who repeatedly and gleefully agitates Grag by pointing out he is not human. Their constant disagreements and Otho’s competitive teasing provide many of the lighter moments in the stories. Despite these rivalries, Grag is fiercely loyal and protective of his master, Captain Future, and woe betide any evildoer who tries to harm him. His happiest moments are when Captain Future acknowledges his humanity, such as when told, Grag, you are more human than most humans I know.
