OVA
Description
Gust Turbolence is a supporting character in the Agent Aika series, where he works as a professional salvager. He is the son of a company president and comes from a well-off family, but he chooses not to rely on that wealth or status. Instead, he prefers to be independent and build a name for himself as a salvager, earning his own living through his work. In the original series, he is twenty-four years old.
On the surface, Gust can come across as a brash or rash individual, but this exterior belies his true capability as a skillful professional. His personality is defined in large part by his persistent romantic interest in Aika Sumeragi, the protagonist. He repeatedly asks her out on dates, but she consistently refuses his advances. Despite this rejection, he remains a recurring presence in her life and work. Their relationship has an additional layer of rivalry, as they work for competing salvage companies, and he has a knack for showing up in the right place at the right time to claim a bounty or reward that might have otherwise gone to Aika. This dynamic paints him as a friendly rival and a persistent suitor, adding a layer of competition and lighthearted tension to the missions.
Within the story, Gust functions as both an ally and a competitor to Aika. While he is often after the same treasures or objectives, he is not a true antagonist. On certain occasions, he sets aside their rivalry to provide assistance to Aika during her more dangerous missions. His role as a fellow salvager places him in the same dangerous, underwater world of the series, where he contends with the same obstacles, including the groups seeking the powerful energy source known as the Lagu. He appears in multiple episodes throughout the series, and a younger version of the character appears in the prequel OVA, Aika R-16: Virgin Mission. In that entry, which is set years before the original story, he is fourteen years old and works as a waiter on a private cruiser, showing a very different stage of his life before he became a salvager.
In terms of his development, the contrast between his appearances in the original series and the prequel is most notable. The later story shows a less-established, younger version of the character, providing a glimpse into his past before he entered the competitive world of salvage work. His motivations remain consistent across his appearances in the original story: he is driven by a desire for self-sufficiency and professional success, as well as his ongoing, unrequited interest in Aika. Regarding his abilities, while no specific specialized combat techniques or unique powers are detailed, he is consistently described as being skillful at his job as a salvager, which involves underwater operations and recovery in a post-catastrophic world. His competence is demonstrated by his ability to successfully compete with Aika for bounties.
