Description
Ginkan, whose name translates directly to Silver Knight, serves as the captain of the 13th Squadron of the Crimson Knights within the online game The World. As the second-in-command to Subaru, the guild's leader, his primary duty is to enforce order and uphold justice throughout the game's many servers. In the real world, he is a twenty-three-year-old man who works a part-time job at a video rental store, though this life remains entirely separate from his actions within the game. His player character, or PC, is a Blademaster, and his appearance is a customized version of the standard Crimson Knight armor, featuring a helmet with distinct horns, added chest and back plates, and red eyes that set him apart from other knights.
Personality is the driving force behind all of Ginkan's actions. He possesses an incredibly rigid and unwavering belief in justice and order, viewing the world in stark terms of right and wrong, legal and criminal. This zealous commitment leads him to see himself as a necessary enforcer, someone who must police The World and eliminate any player he believes is cheating or disrupting the game's balance. His concept of justice is absolute, famously stating that those who stand above others must have the noblest ideals, and that anyone who cannot manage the will of the masses is unfit to lead. This pride in his position and his belief in the righteousness of his cause are his defining traits, and they frequently blind him to the complexities of situations that do not fit into his rigid moral framework.
Ginkan's core motivation is the pursuit of what he perceives as justice, which quickly focuses on the mysterious Wavemaster, Tsukasa. After investigating reports of an illegally edited character, Ginkan confronts Tsukasa and is swiftly defeated by a powerful, unworldly Guardian that protects him. This defeat is a deep humiliation for Ginkan, and he becomes obsessed with capturing Tsukasa to prove the strength of the Crimson Knights and bring the supposed hacker to justice. He eventually succeeds in capturing Tsukasa with the help of the former knight Crim and the rogue player Sora, but his triumph is short-lived. He becomes increasingly displeased with the strange interest that Subaru, his revered leader, takes in their prisoner. His protective feelings for Subaru, which some players interpret as jealousy toward Tsukasa, cause him to act on his own authority to keep the Wavemaster away from her.
This conflict between his duty and his leader's will leads to a crucial turning point. When Subaru confronts him about his unilateral actions, his stubborn pride and his belief that he was defending the honor of the Knights cause a fierce argument. Disgusted by his inability to see beyond his rigid sense of justice, Subaru makes the dramatic decision to disband the Crimson Knights entirely. This event leaves Ginkan completely lost and without purpose. He wanders the game world aimlessly, a shell of his former confident self, and even becomes a target for Sora's mockery. It is only through another encounter with Crim, a more easygoing and level-headed player, that Ginkan is able to regain his senses and redefine his role. He decides that his true purpose is not to lead the knights, but simply to protect Subaru, no matter what her decisions might be.
Throughout the story, Ginkan undergoes significant development. He transforms from an arrogant and inflexible enforcer into a humbled, yet still devoted, ally. Once he sets aside his personal pride and his need for authority, he is able to join forces with the very people he once opposed. He forms new friendships, most notably with the heavy blade Mimiru, and becomes a valuable and honorable ally in the final battles against the malevolent force known as Morganna, helping to defend both Subaru and Tsukasa. In this final role, he retains his protective nature but channels it into genuine support rather than overbearing control. As a Blademaster, a frontline fighter class, his notable abilities lie in physical combat, though his ultimate power pales in comparison to the supernatural Guardian he initially sought to destroy.
