Description
Bong Juyeong, almost universally addressed by her nickname Kaorin, is a student and a classmate of the main characters during their first two years of high school. While she is a more peripheral figure in the original source material, her role is significantly expanded in the animated adaptation, where she appears more frequently with the central group and is even featured in the opening and closing sequences.

Kaorin is characterized by her shy and sensitive nature, often appearing reserved and acting as a sensible straight man to the more eccentric personalities around her. However, this calm exterior is easily shattered when it comes to her most defining trait: an intense, unrequited, and all-consuming crush on her classmate Sakaki. This infatuation is the primary driver of her actions and emotional state, leading to dramatic mood swings. She is prone to extreme jealousy, particularly when others like Tomo get physically close to Sakaki, and can display a surprisingly ferocious temper in these moments. Her feelings are often depicted with over-the-top, romantic imagery, such as wedding bells and fields of flowers, highlighting the depth of her devotion. Despite the transparency of her feelings to the audience, they remain largely unnoticed by Sakaki herself, and Kaorin is too fearful of rejection to ever confess. There is an ironic tragedy to her crush, as she idolizes Sakaki for her cool and aloof persona, which is precisely the side of herself that the shy and animal-loving Sakaki wishes to change.

Aside from her romantic fixation, Kaorin has several other notable traits and abilities. She demonstrates artistic talent, helping to design a penguin costume for the child prodigy Chihiro during a school festival. She is also academically proficient, consistently scoring high marks on tests alongside her best friend, Chihiro. For her first two years of high school, she is a member of the Astronomy Club, attending their camps during summer break. Her motivations largely revolve around her desire to be closer to Sakaki, with her club activities and social choices often influenced by this goal.

Kaorin's key relationships define much of her high school experience. Her best and most constant friend is Chihiro, with whom she is almost always seen, though their friendship can be strained by Kaorin's jealous outbursts. Her relationship with Sakaki is the central focus of her character, an unfulfilled dynamic where she worships from afar. In her third year, she is unfortunately placed in the homeroom class of the predatory teacher Kimura, who develops a disturbing and open obsession with her, much to her horror and dismay. A glimpse of her home life is provided when her mother, who bears a strong resemblance to her, appears in one episode to wake her from a dream.

Over the course of the story, Kaorin's role develops primarily through increased integration with the main cast in the anime, joining them for events like preparing for the culture festival and a New Year's shrine visit. Her situation with Mr. Kimura escalates throughout her final year, becoming a persistent source of anxiety. Ultimately, on graduation day, her primary concern remains Sakaki, as she anxiously requests a photograph with her beloved, demonstrating that her journey ends much as it began, with her feelings unresolved. In terms of notable abilities, beyond her artistic and academic skills, she has a vivid inner world, frequently experiencing dramatic daydreams centered on Sakaki, and is known for her skill in making hilariously neurotic and jealous facial expressions.
