Description
Mirai Ozora is a seventeen-year-old high school girl living in Tokyo in the year 2045. She is the middle child of the Ozora family, with an older brother named Hiroshi and a younger brother named Nozomu. On the surface, she appears to be a typical teenage girl of her era, deeply interested in fashion, shopping, and beauty contests, which she has won multiple times. She frequently runs up credit card bills and finds creative ways to scrounge for money. Her personality is cheerful, energetic, and somewhat oblivious to the consequences of her actions, often acting on impulse without fully thinking things through. Her primary motivation at the start of the story is her crush on Kaoru Misaki, her brother’s best friend and a handsome astronaut, and she often tries to find excuses to spend time with him. Her best friend and occasional rival in beauty pageants is Mao Shirase.

Mirai’s role in the story begins when she becomes suspicious of her brother Hiroshi’s secret activities. After discovering that he is the superhero Captain Tokyo, she sneaks into his room and finds the design plans for the Mol Unit, a device that generates a molecular armor suit capable of defying the laws of physics. Disappointed by what she considers a tacky design, she modifies the costume to her own aesthetic preferences, unknowingly reprogramming the Mol Unit’s configuration. This alteration causes the suit to randomly switch between Hiroshi’s original muscular male form and Mirai’s feminine sailor-girl design. Unable to reverse the changes, Hiroshi is forced to let Mirai wear the suit. She thus becomes the superheroine Moldiver, a role she initially embraces for personal reasons but gradually takes seriously as threats arise.

As Moldiver, Mirai’s key relationships include her brother Hiroshi, who acts as her guide and support during battles, and her younger brother Nozomu, who later develops his own Mol Unit and becomes a rival called Moldiver III. She also interacts frequently with the villainous Dr. Machinegal and his army of android dolls, the Machinegal Dolls, each named after famous models. Her crush on Kaoru Misaki remains a driving force, and she often uses her powers to help him or get closer to him.

Throughout the six-episode OVA, Mirai undergoes character development. Initially, she is a carefree and somewhat irresponsible girl who uses the Moldiver suit for personal convenience, such as traveling quickly to see Kaoru or to earn money. However, as she repeatedly faces danger from the Machinegal Dolls and her younger brother, she becomes more capable and learns to handle the suit’s powers effectively. She grows from a reluctant hero who stumbles through battles into a confident superheroine who can think on her feet, even when the suit’s random costume change leaves her in an unfamiliar form. Her motivations shift from purely selfish interests to a genuine desire to protect her friends and family.

Mirai’s notable abilities come from the Mol Unit, which creates dimensional shields around her body, granting her superhuman strength, the ability to fly (reportedly up to the speed of light), invulnerability to bullets and missiles, resistance to extreme temperatures and pressure, and the power to become intangible. She activates the suit with the command “Metamorforce” and must be unclothed when transforming, as the suit will destroy any clothing she is wearing. The Mol Unit has a built-in time limit of 666 seconds (just over eleven minutes), after which it deactivates, leaving her vulnerable. Additionally, the suit’s form is unpredictable—it may manifest as her preferred feminine Moldiver design or as the bulky male Captain Tokyo form, which she has difficulty controlling due to its complexity. Despite these limitations, Mirai learns to utilize the suit’s full potential, eventually even fighting in outer space to save the life of Kaoru Misaki. Her growth as a hero is marked by her increasing ability to adapt to unexpected situations and her willingness to put herself in harm’s way for others.
