Description
Briareos Hecatonchires is one of the central protagonists of the Appleseed franchise, originally appearing in the manga created by Masamune Shirow in 1985. His very name is drawn from Greek mythology, referencing Briareus the Vigorous, one of the Hecatonchires, the hundred-handed giants, which foreshadows his extraordinary cybernetic capabilities.

Briareos's background is marked by a difficult and violent past. Originally from the Mediterranean, he was exploited as a child operative by the KGB. He eventually killed his unit's commanding officer and sought political asylum in the former United States, an act that placed him on an international most-wanted list as an assassin. A pivotal change came when he met an agent from a special security force, with whose daughter, Deunan Knute, he would eventually begin operating as a partner. Their partnership was both professional and personal; they became lovers before the outbreak of World War III. A catastrophic explosion left the then thirty-one-year-old Briareos with no choice but to undergo a full cyborg body replacement to survive, an event that fundamentally reshaped his existence.

In terms of personality, despite the immense transformation of his physical form, Briareos retains a strong sense of his own humanity. While three-quarters of his original biological body has been replaced with machinery, he still maintains some organic systems, including a cardiovascular and digestive system, allowing him to eat, drink, and even become inebriated. He retains all of his original human memories and his personality, and though his voice is now produced by a speech synthesizer, it carries an accent similar to his former self. He is a seasoned and highly trained ESWAT officer, skilled in strategy and combat, yet he remains a fundamentally caring individual, particularly in his deep and enduring bond with Deunan.

Briareos’s primary motivation is intrinsically linked to his role as a protector. Together with Deunan, he joins the elite Extra Special Weapons and Tactics unit in the utopian city of Olympus. He serves as a loyal defender of the city and its inhabitants, while his most personal drive is the protection of Deunan, his partner and lover. His role in the story is that of a frontline operative, a veteran soldier whose combat experience and cybernetic enhancements make him a formidable asset to ESWAT. He often acts as the physical anchor to Deunan's more instinctive and sharpshooting skills, with the pair functioning as an exceptionally effective team.

His key relationships are few but profoundly important. The most significant is with Deunan Knute, who is both his romantic partner and his professional point man. They have been involved since before the war, and their bond is the emotional core of his character. Another key relationship, albeit a more complex and reluctant one, is with Tereus, his clone. Briareos comes to believe that his own body is weakening over time from accumulated damage, leading him to reluctantly consider that Tereus might be better suited to be Deunan’s partner in the field.

The character experiences notable development in his self-perception. Despite his immense power and resilience, he is not invincible and can die from injury, illness, or age. As he suffers significant damage in missions, he begins to see his own physical composition as weakening, a realization that forces him to confront his own mortality and his ability to continue protecting those he cares about.

His most defining feature is his extraordinary array of notable abilities, derived from the Hecatonchires Cyborg System. His body is a masterpiece of cybernetic technology, featuring elastic skin capable of feeling sensation and self-regulating temperature. His head is equipped with eight eyes: four on his face, two at the bases of his rear-facing sensor ears, and two at the tips of those ears, allowing him to see around corners without exposing his body. His human brain is augmented by an auxiliary biological computer that processes information conceptually. The Hecatonchires system itself allows him to control dozens of independent limbs or even entirely separate cyborg bodies without additional mental strain, a capability so powerful it theoretically enables a single cyborg to control an entire aircraft carrier. In combat, he typically wields this multitasking ability to devastating effect, such as piloting a Landmate battle suit while simultaneously using its multiple arms to fire several weapons at once.
