Description
Edward Uranus III is a significant character in the 2004 anime film Appleseed, where he serves as the Supreme Commander of the Olympus Regular Army. An elderly man with gold hair and purple eyes, he is a human who holds a deep and long-standing distrust of the Bioroids, the genetically engineered beings who coexist with humanity in the utopian city of Olympus. Despite his high rank, Uranus did not always serve the city's government; his long career in various militaries during the late 2100s included service with the General Administration Agency and the earliest incarnations of the Central Management Bureau.

Central to Uranus's personality is his hardline stance against the Bioroids, a species he originally opposed creating and continues to view with suspicion. While his goal is to see humans regain full control of Olympus, he is not depicted as an irrational zealot. Unlike his subordinate, Colonel Hades, Uranus is capable of restraint and political interaction with Bioroids, even if his coexistence with them is fragile. His primary motivation is to secure humanity's future, even if that extreme end would require the destruction of the D-Tank and the mass-genocide of all Bioroids. However, he is not a simple villain; he is a pragmatist who regrets the death of Dr. Gilliam Knute, the creator of the Bioroids, and claims to have known her husband, Carl, well.

In the story, Uranus represents the military faction of Olympus's tripartite government, standing alongside Prime Minister Athena Areios and the Council of Elders, who are linked to the super-computer Gaia. His role becomes critical as a conspiracy unfolds. He attempts to convince the protagonist, Deunan Knute, that the Bioroids seek to control humanity and tries to persuade her to help him destroy the D-Tank, which he believes holds the key to stopping them. His key relationships reveal his complexity. He shares a past friendship with Deunan's parents, and he deeply regrets the circumstances of her mother's death. While he is initially aligned with humans who oppose the Bioroids, his most crucial relationship is with his political rival, Prime Minister Athena. When Uranus discovers that his reactionary anger has been manipulated by the Bioroid supremacist Seven Elders to instigate a genocide of humanity, he turns against his extremist allies. Demonstrating a strong sense of duty and honor, he immediately calls for a truce and works with Athena to maintain the fragile balance between the species.

Uranus undergoes a significant development from a potential antagonist to a pragmatic ally. He begins as a military leader ready to eliminate the Bioroid race but ends as a man who chooses surrender over being a pawn in a greater scheme of mutual destruction. His notable abilities are not physical or combat-oriented; rather, his power lies in his military authority and strategic mind. As the head of the Olympus Regular Army, he commands significant forces and plays a pivotal role in the political and military battles that determine the city's fate. The character of Edward Uranus III does not appear in the original Appleseed manga, being a creation for the 2004 film adaptation.
