Description
Phinx, more commonly known as Phinks Magcub, is a character from the anime Hunter x Hunter. He is a member of the Phantom Troupe, an infamous and dangerous gang of thieves with Class-A bounties that originated from Meteor City, also known as Ryūseigai. The group is notorious for crimes such as the massacre of the Kurta Clan. Within the Troupe, Phinks bears the number five spider tattoo and belongs to the members who handle frontline combat.
In appearance, Phinks is a fairly tall and muscular man with black eyes. He has blond hair, though it appears dark brown in the 1999 anime adaptation. His most distinguishing features are his piercing eyes and his complete lack of eyebrows, which gives him a striking and somewhat intimidating look.
Personality-wise, Phinks is brash, hot-tempered, and blunt. He has a tendency to get into conflicts with other people and is quick to resort to threats or violence. Despite this rough exterior, he is intensely loyal to the Phantom Troupe and especially to its leader, Chrollo Lucilfer. He works particularly well alongside his fellow Troupe member Feitan, and the two are often seen operating together. Interestingly, he displays a level of compassion that is unexpected for a member of the group. When Zazan's former minions in the Chimera Ant arc begged him to kill them after being freed from her control, he refused to simply execute them while they were helpless on their knees. Instead, he urged them to fight back and die honorably in battle.
Phinks is a genius when it comes to unarmed combat. He fights with his hands, which are extremely powerful, and he has a habit of killing opponents by breaking their necks or using other kinds of twisting techniques. His most notable Nen ability is Ripper Cyclotron, an Enhancement-type technique in which he rotates his arm in a circular, cranking motion. Each rotation charges more aura into his arm, and the resulting punch becomes dramatically more destructive depending on how many rotations he completes. The main drawback is that the charging process requires time, leaving him vulnerable if an opponent interrupts him or if he overdoes the windup.
Phinks is one of the physically strongest members of the Troupe and ranks second in arm-wrestling among them. His role in the story begins with his participation in the Troupe's brutal confrontation with the mafia during the Yorknew City arc, where the group becomes entangled with Kurapika and the kidnapping of Chrollo. Later, during the Chimera Ant arc, he is sent to deal with the Chimera Ant threat and fights alongside Feitan and other Troupe members against the soldier-class ants. In the later parts of the story, after Hisoka kills several members of the Troupe, Phinks becomes part of the group actively hunting Hisoka down, making him an ongoing danger in those events.
His development is subtle but present. While he remains a ruthless fighter and a loyal member of the Troupe, moments such as his treatment of Zazan's former minions reveal a code of honor beneath his violent nature. Overall, Phinks is a powerful, loyal, and unpredictable fighter whose physical strength and Nen ability make him one of the most dangerous members of the Phantom Troupe.
