Description
Agon is a minor character from the Hunter × Hunter series, known primarily for his participation in the 287th Hunter Examination as candidate number 281. His role in the story is brief but significant, serving as a pivotal moment during the exam's final phase.
In terms of appearance, Agon is depicted as a man with distinct features, including bushy eyebrows and a large, crooked nose. He typically keeps his hair in a ponytail. His outfit consists of a cloak that covers his upper body, worn over a matching dress-like garment. The color scheme of his attire differs between anime adaptations; in the 1999 version, he wears a lilac cloak, while in the 2011 adaptation, his cloak is blue and his hair is shown as gray.
Regarding his personality, not much is known about Agon due to his limited screen time. However, he is noted for displaying considerable courage and an adamant, intrepid attitude. This is most clearly demonstrated when he refuses to back down or show fear while facing Hisoka, an opponent who is known for his bloodlust and overwhelming strength.
Agon's primary role in the story takes place during the fourth phase of the Hunter Exam on Zevil Island. He is one of the 24 examinees who successfully passes the third phase and advances to this final stage of the exam. During this phase, examinees are assigned targets, and Agon becomes the prey of Hisoka. Unbeknownst to both Agon and Hisoka, the protagonist Gon Freecss is hiding nearby in the forest. Gon’s plan is to use the confrontation between Agon and Hisoka as a distraction to steal Hisoka's number plate. When Hisoka closes in on him, Agon retaliates by drawing his rapier and taunting his powerful foe. As the two lunge at each other to attack, Gon uses his fishing rod to snatch Hisoka's badge, momentarily surprising both combatants. Despite this brief distraction, Agon collapses and dies as a result of Hisoka's lethal attack.
Regarding abilities, Agon is established as a skilled fencer who wields a rapier. He is noted to be left-handed. He does not display any use of Nen, the supernatural life energy used by many advanced characters in the series, and his combat skills, while competent enough to pass earlier exam phases, are no match for Hisoka's prowess. His key relationships are minimal, but he interacts briefly with Hisoka as his final opponent and with Gon, who inadvertently uses Agon's fatal confrontation as an opportunity for his own advancement. Agon is also seen conversing animatedly with another examinee named Supa during the third phase of the exam. His development is nonexistent due to his early death, and he ultimately serves as a narrative device to demonstrate both the ruthlessness of the Hunter Exam and the cunning, morally complex nature of Gon's determination to pass at any cost.
