Description
Bodoro is a martial artist who participates in the 287th Hunter Examination as candidate number 191. He is an older man with a muscular build, a prominent chin, a mustache, and long gray hair which he typically wears tied back in a ponytail. His usual attire consists of the traditional robes of a martial artist, reflecting his disciplined background.
Personality wise, Bodoro adheres to a strict and honorable code that prevents him from fighting children, regardless of their apparent combat ability. He is a calm and observant individual who does not display the overt ambition or aggression seen in many other examinees. His personal ethics are strong enough that he expresses a clear preference to avoid matches against young participants like Gon and Killua during the final phase of the exam.
Bodoro's primary motivation is to pass the Hunter Exam, which he is skilled enough to reach the final phase of. During the exam, he successfully defeats another candidate named Ryu on Zevil Island to qualify for the final stage. In the final phase, his first opponent is the magician Hisoka. Despite his considerable experience as a fighter, Bodoro is unable to land a single blow on Hisoka and takes a severe beating. When knocked to the floor, Hisoka whispers something into his ear that shocks Bodoro so deeply that he immediately surrenders, though the content of this whisper is never revealed. A common theory among viewers is that Hisoka threatened to fight the children Bodoro wished to protect if he did not forfeit.
After his defeat, Bodoro is scheduled to fight against Leorio. Leorio, seeing that Bodoro is still wounded from his previous match, delays the start of the fight out of fairness. However, before the fight can properly conclude, Killua, who has been mentally compromised by a confrontation with his brother Illumi, interferes. Killua uses his bare hand to stab Bodoro through the chest from behind, killing him instantly. This event leads to Killua's disqualification from the exam and serves as a brutal demonstration of the Zoldyck family's lethal assassination techniques and the unpredictable dangers of the exam.
In terms of abilities, Bodoro is a capable and experienced martial artist. Having passed the first three phases of the notoriously difficult Hunter Exam, he possesses above-average stamina, agility, and combat proficiency. It is noted that he normally fights with a spear and shield, though he competed bare-handed in the final trial. Netero, the chairman of the exam, viewed Bodoro and Leorio as evenly matched, noting that while Bodoro had the advantage of experience, Leorio held the edge in pure combat skill. Although he was easily defeated by Hisoka, Bodoro showed great fortitude by refusing to give up until the whispered threat, demonstrating a resilient will. His role in the story is ultimately as a tragic figure who embodies the harsh and often unfair reality of the Hunter Exam, where possessing skill and honor is no guarantee of survival. His death at the hands of a fellow applicant highlights the immense threat posed by Killua and the dark legacy of the Zoldyck family.
