Description
Neon Nostrade is the daughter of Light Nostrade, the head of the Nostrade crime family in the world of Hunter x Hunter. She is a natural-born specialist-type Nen user, though she remains unaware that her fortune-telling ability is a form of Nen. Her ability, known as Lovely Ghostwriter, allows her to predict the future through automatic writing. When she enters a trance, a green, ghost-like entity appears and writes predictions in the form of four-verse poems. These prophecies are one hundred percent accurate but often cryptic, requiring interpretation. Each verse corresponds to a week of the current month, and if the recipient heeds the warnings, they can potentially alter their fate. Neon cannot predict her own future using this power.
Neon's personality is marked by a combination of being pampered, apathetic, and childlike. She is a spoiled teenager who frequently throws tantrums when she does not get her way. Her primary hobby is collecting human body parts, including eyes, limbs, and organs, all of which are obtained from deceased individuals. This macabre interest stems from a detached, almost innocent inability to fully grasp the value of human life, rather than from malice. Despite her selfishness, she is not intentionally cruel and can be good-natured in her own limited way. Her father indulges her collection and uses her fortune-telling ability to elevate the Nostrade family's status within the Mafia, securing powerful clients and wealth.
Neon plays a central role in the Yorknew City arc. She attends the underground auction in Yorknew City to acquire rare human specimens for her collection, which brings the Nostrade family into direct contact with the Phantom Troupe and Kurapika. Kurapika, who has been hired as a bodyguard for the Nostrade family, is assigned to protect Neon during her stay. Her fortune-telling ability becomes a crucial plot device: the Mafia bosses rely on her predictions, and later, Chrollo Lucilfer, the leader of the Phantom Troupe, steals her ability using his own Nen power, Bandit's Secret. Unaware that her power has been taken, Neon continues to believe she can still use it. Chrollo immediately employs the stolen ability to write fortunes for the Phantom Troupe members, helping them avoid death at the hands of Kurapika.
The loss of her ability has devastating consequences for the Nostrade family. Without Neon's fortunes, the family loses its leverage in the underworld, and Light Nostrade suffers a mental breakdown. During the Greed Island arc, it is revealed that the Nostrade family has fallen from grace, and Neon remains oblivious to the true reason her ability no longer works. Later in the manga, Chrollo reveals to Hisoka that stolen abilities vanish from his book only when the original owner dies. When the ability Lovely Ghostwriter disappears from Chrollo's collection, it strongly implies that Neon has died off-screen, though her death is never shown. The exact circumstances remain unknown, but it is speculated that rival Mafia families or other threats may have targeted her once she was no longer useful.
Neon's key relationships are defined by her dependence on her father and her connection to Kurapika, who serves as her protector during the Yorknew arc. Her father values her primarily for her ability rather than for her own well-being, a truth that becomes evident when the family's fortunes collapse. Her encounter with Chrollo is pivotal, as he directly removes the source of her value. Neon's development is largely tragic: she begins as a privileged if macabre heiress, loses her defining power without understanding how, and ultimately fades into irrelevance. Her fate underscores the harsh reality of the Hunter x Hunter world, where characters without combat capability or continued utility can be discarded. Her ability, however, leaves a lasting impact on the story, influencing the survival of the Phantom Troupe and altering the balance of power in the Mafia.
