TV-Series
Description
Izunabi, also known as Izunavi, is a supporting character in Hunter x Hunter who serves as Kurapika's Nen master. He is a professional Hunter whose primary narrative function is to guide one of the series' main protagonists through the complex and dangerous process of mastering his life energy.

Izunabi is typically depicted as a tall, relaxed man with a disheveled appearance, often dressed in a traditional keikogi martial arts uniform and sandals, sometimes carrying a duffel bag. Later in the series, when he takes on the role of a royal bodyguard, he is seen in more formal attire, including a black suit and tie. His physical demeanor is generally calm and composed, which complements his role as a teacher and mentor.

In terms of personality, Izunabi is supportive of Kurapika's goals but serves as a crucial voice of reason, often advising his student against reckless or self-destructive paths. He is patient yet can become frustrated when his pupil shows him a lack of respect or acts impulsively. A serious and careful individual when it comes to the principles of Nen, he also demonstrates an appreciation for nature, having lived in the woods while intensively training Kurapika. His approach to mentorship is pragmatic; he does not simply hand over power but tests potential and demands a clear understanding of the risks involved.

Izunabi enters Kurapika's life during the Heaven's Arena arc. He first tests the young Hunter by stealing his license and throwing a Nen-infused acorn at him. Impressed that Kurapika could sense the attack despite being unable to see it, Izunabi agrees to become his teacher. His primary motivation is simply to fulfill the role of a capable and responsible instructor, equipping Kurapika with the tools necessary to survive and achieve his ambitions. His place in the story is firmly established as the mentor who provides the technical and theoretical foundation for Kurapika's power.

The relationship between Izunabi and Kurapika is the most significant of Izunabi's connections. It is a classic master-student dynamic, characterized by initial tension as the driven and vengeful Kurapika clashes with the more measured and methodical Izunabi. Over time, this relationship develops into a deep respect. Izunabi perceives that Kurapika is mentally bound by his quest for revenge, and rather than discouraging him, he teaches him how to weaponize that resolve through the Nen principles of Condition and Vow. Kurapika later recruits Izunabi for the dangerous voyage to the Dark Continent, hiring him as a bodyguard for a Kakin prince, demonstrating the continued trust and value he places in his former master. Izunabi also participates in the election for the new Hunter Association chairman following the death of Isaac Netero, showcasing his standing within the Hunter community.

One of the most critical aspects of Izunabi's development as a character is seen through his success as a teacher. He transforms Kurapika from a talented but vulnerable novice into a hunter capable of confronting and defeating a member of the deadly Phantom Troupe. His most significant contribution to the story is his detailed explanation of Nen's advanced concepts, particularly how imposing strict limitations on one's abilities (a Vow) can exponentially increase their power (a Condition). He warns Kurapika of the double-edged nature of this technique, explaining that breaking a vow could result in the permanent loss of one's Nen. This lesson directly leads to the creation of Kurapika's most powerful chains.

Regarding notable abilities, Izunabi is a capable Nen user of the Emitter type. While he rarely showcases his full power, his teaching ability is his most prominent skill, demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical grasp of Hatsu (personal expression of Nen) and Nen contracts. The only practical demonstration of his power involves him launching an acorn covered in his aura with enough force to destroy a tree trunk, proving that even a small object becomes a deadly projectile in his hands. Beyond combat, he is also noted to be a talented singer.
