Description
Dita Liebely is a central figure and the primary female protagonist of her story, defined by an irrepressible zest for life that stands in stark contrast to the often bleak circumstances of her origins. At sixteen years of age, she holds the position of an apprentice pilot and serves as a cheerful, energetic presence aboard her ship. Physically, she is an attractive young woman with long red hair and blue eyes, typically dressed in a black crop top, a white jacket, and a white skirt with pink linings, paired with white and black boots.

Dita's personality is her most defining feature. She is relentlessly bubbly, lively, and possesses a positive, almost naive outlook on life that manifests in every aspect of her behavior, including during combat where she refers to enemies simply as bad aliens. This perpetual cheerfulness can be frustrating to her more serious comrades, but it is not born from simple ignorance. Instead, it is a conscious, deeply ingrained coping mechanism. Having grown up in an orphanage within her home unit on the planet Mejere, a society of only women, Dita learned that acting cheerful and doing silly things could lift the spirits of those around her when times were hard. As a result, she grew into someone who genuinely struggles to know how to act in sad situations, making her a natural, if unwitting, mood-maker for the crew. Her straightforward and friendly nature sometimes earns her ridicule, particularly from the more stern crew members who find her infatuation with a male difficult to understand, but Dita rarely minds their scorn.

A significant element of Dita's character is her lifelong fascination with extraterrestrials. As a child, she often daydreamed about aliens who would arrive in a spaceship to take her away from her world to a land of happiness, a variation of a classic fantasy that is remarkable given her all-female society viewed males as a hostile alien species. This childhood dream directly fuels her primary motivation and key relationship within the story. When she encounters Hibiki Tokai, a young man from the male planet of Tarak, she immediately becomes convinced he is the alien she has always waited for. She playfully dubs him Mr. Alien, while he exasperatedly refers to her as that UFO Girl, and she develops strong romantic feelings for him from their first meeting. Her fascination is so intense that she often follows him around with a camera, and she expresses her affection in practical ways, particularly through cooking, taking great satisfaction whenever he eagerly eats the meals she prepares for him. Her feelings for Hibiki go beyond mere fantasy, and she eventually comes to realize that having him by her side is more important than any childhood dream of aliens coming to take her away.

Dita's role in the story is deeply tied to her abilities as a pilot. She operates a blue Dread, a fighter plane from Mejere. Along with two other Dread pilots, her craft is exposed to a mysterious energy at the beginning of the journey, which grants it the unique ability to merge with Hibiki's Vanguard mecha. When they unite, they form the Vandread Dita-type, also known as the Blue Kachina, a term that is said to roughly mean life bringer. This blue giant mecha is powerful and embodies offensive combat, equipped with two powerful dual energy cannons that can be configured for both long-range and short-range attacks, functioning as shoulder-mounted cannons, arm-mounted lances, or even a single powerful javelin. Over time, her skills as a fighter grow considerably, and she ascends to become a co-leader among the pilots, ranking just under the more experienced Jura and Barnette.

Throughout the narrative, Dita remains a steadfast and caring, if sometimes childish, companion. Her persistent cheerfulness proves vital on more than one occasion, helping to restore the crew's spirits during critical moments in their battle against powerful alien forces known as the harvesters. While her demeanor is often childlike, her character demonstrates growth, and her relationship with Hibiki matures from an obsessive fascination into a genuine, mutual romance. It is only near the conclusion of the story that she finally calls Hibiki by his name, and he calls her by hers, signifying the evolution of their bond.
