TV-Series
Description
Vylk is an elderly, blind demon residing in the Demon Village, an anime-original character absent from the manga. Presumably born and raised there, he lived happily with his family, including a child and later his granddaughter, Emma. He completely lost his vision at an unknown time. Vylk is one of the rare survivors who consumed Mujika's blood centuries ago, references varying between 400 and 700 years. This granted him enduring sapience without needing human flesh and allowed him to evade execution by the demon nobility targeting others with this trait.
He appears frail and elderly, marked by deep wrinkles and several missing teeth. His attire includes a long hooded robe featuring red and blue stripes on the sleeves and hood, a red sash around his waist, and a pointed bronze mask often raised. A grey cloth covers his blind eyes, and he constantly uses a walking stick while hauling lumber.
Vylk exhibits complex morality. While he consumes humans "depending on the situation," he acknowledges their intelligence and personhood. Deeply religious, he frequently visits an abandoned temple to pray and make offerings. Family is paramount, driving him to protect his granddaughter at all costs. He harbors guilt over past actions, including consuming a dying human 15 years prior who gave him part of a William Minerva pen—an item he kept despite its initial meaninglessness.
During the King of Paradise arc, Vylk encountered human children hiding in the temple. His blindness prevented identification, leading him to believe they were demon children. When he dropped his offerings and cane, Emma helped him despite the risk. Later, during Norman's attack, Vylk protected his granddaughter from degeneration by having her drink his blood after Norman injured him, an act witnessed by human Emma that spared their lives.
In the Return to Grace Field arc, Vylk played a pivotal role in the uprising against Peter Ratri. He led demon civilians alongside Mujika and Sonju to storm Ratri's stronghold, declaring an end to centuries of oppression and announcing that demons no longer required human cattle due to the spread of Mujika's blood through his lineage.
His primary ability stems from Mujika's blood, called "Evil Blood" or "Cursed Blood," which halts degeneration. Ingesting a drop of his blood transmits this trait to other demons, enabling survival without human consumption. His knowledge of demon society and the temple's religious practices aided the resistance.
Key relationships include his granddaughter Emma, whom he loves unconditionally, and Mujika, whom he respects as his savior. His encounter with human Emma challenged his worldview, leading him to support her cause for coexistence.
