Description
Master Mage Clef, known in the manga as Guru Clef, is the most powerful sorcerer in the magical world of Cephiro. Despite appearing as a childlike figure with short white hair, blue eyes, and a small stature, he is well over seven hundred years old, having maintained a youthful appearance by his own will. He wears elaborate priestly robes adorned with blue jewels and a horned tiara, and carries a magical staff. Clef is the supreme master of magic in Cephiro, holding the highest rank among its mages, and has personally taught magic to several key figures, including Princess Emeraude, High Priest Zagato, his brother Lantis, and the sorceress Alcyone. When Emeraude became the Pillar of Cephiro, Clef served as her personal attendant and closest advisor, appointing Zagato as High Priest and Lantis as Captain of the Guard.
In the first series, Clef is tasked by Emeraude with guiding the three girls from another world—Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu—on their quest to become Magic Knights and save Cephiro. He provides them with self-growing armor, teaches them the basics of magic, and gives them insight into their mission. However, shortly after their first meeting, he is turned to stone by Zagato and Alcyone, though he continues to communicate with the Magic Knights through the creature Mokona. After being freed, he remains a vital source of counsel throughout their journey.
In the second series, Magic Knight Rayearth 2, Clef plays a more active and defensive role. With the Pillar gone, Cephiro is vulnerable to invasions from neighboring worlds—Autozam, Chizeta, and Fahren. Clef works tirelessly to protect the palace and its inhabitants, surrounding the castle with a powerful barrier. He nearly loses his life when he uses a strong spell to retrieve the Magic Knights from the grasp of the villains Lady Debonair and Innova. His dedication to Cephiro and its people is unwavering, and he continues to fight to preserve the land even as his own strength wavers.
Personality-wise, Clef is pragmatic and deeply loyal, but he also has a short temper, especially when provoked or called a child. He values silence and dislikes noise. He is kind and good-natured at heart, though his initial meeting with the girls is somewhat brusque. He struggles with guilt over the role he played in the Magic Knights’ tragic destiny, having known from the beginning that their true purpose was to kill Emeraude. He never fully forgives himself for keeping that truth from them, and in the second season he reflects on the flaws of the Pillar system itself, questioning whether the world built on such a sacrifice was truly beautiful.
Key relationships include his mentorship of Princess Emeraude, Zagato, Lantis, and Alcyone. He is also a frequent guide to the Magic Knights, especially Hikaru, with whom he gets along well. In the anime, Umi develops a crush on him, but Clef does not reciprocate romantic interest. He also possesses a magic ring capable of opening the Pillar’s chamber.
Clef’s magical abilities are vast and varied, encompassing multiple schools of magic such as summoning, attack, and defensive spells. Known incantations include protective barriers, lightning summoning, beast summoning, beast release, teleportation, and magic transference. He is also able to withstand petrification and continue communicating telepathically. His ultimate responsibility is to teach magic to those with potential and to safeguard Cephiro’s future, even at great personal cost.
