Description
Paris, known in the original Japanese version as Ferio and renamed Paris in the Spanish-language dub, is a recurring supporting character in the anime Magic Knight Rayearth 2. He is a young wandering swordsman from the land of Cephiro who first appears during the earlier adventures of the Magic Knights, when the three heroines encounter him in the Forest of Silence, and he continues to play a role in the second season, where his true origins come to the forefront.
His background is closely tied to the royal history of Cephiro, as he is the younger brother of Princess Emeraude, the former Pillar of Cephiro. Because a Pillar is expected to devote her entire will to praying for the peace and prosperity of the land, personal bonds are considered a burden, and in the anime Ferio had his memories of his sister sealed away. As a child he left the palace and carried with him a pair of jeweled orbs tied to Emeraude, objects that allowed his sister to hear his voice even after he forgot her. The seal on his memory weakened over time and faded near the end of the first season, when he recovered the truth of his identity. By the time of Magic Knight Rayearth 2, he openly knows that the Princess the Knights were once called to confront was his own sister.
In terms of personality, Ferio is carefree, cheerful, clever, and somewhat evasive. He has a sardonic and teasing manner and is not always completely honest with others, which initially makes the Magic Knights cautious around him. He can also be quick-tempered, especially in his early appearances, but he gradually mellows as he grows closer to the group. Despite his roguish behavior, he is brave, keeps his promises, and acts with loyalty toward those he comes to care about. He gives the impression of a self-reliant mercenary, but beneath that exterior he is mature and principled, with a strong sense of duty to the people of his land.
His motivations shift across the story. In the first season, he is driven by a desire to reach and protect Princess Emeraude from the high priest Zagato, even though he does not yet remember that she is his sister. In the second season, his motivation becomes more about supporting the re-summoned Magic Knights and helping Cephiro during the crisis surrounding the selection of a new Pillar. He no longer pursues personal glory or reward, and his efforts are directed toward stability and the well-being of those he loves.
His role in Magic Knight Rayearth 2 is more supportive than central. He reveals his connection to Emeraude to the Knights, which deepens the guilt felt by his love interest, Fuu, who struggles with her part in the former Pillar's fate. Ferio does not hold this against her, and his steady presence provides the group with emotional grounding and practical help. He also assists other allies in the defense of Cephiro, lending his combat abilities where they are needed rather than seeking the spotlight.
His most significant relationship is with Fuu Hououji, one of the three Magic Knights. The two form a bond during their journey through the Forest of Silence, and by the second season their feelings have grown into a genuine romance. In the anime he gives Fuu one of his jeweled orbs as a communication device, keeping its twin for himself, and this object becomes a symbol of their connection. Fuu is torn by guilt because she helped bring about the death of his sister, but Ferio's feelings for her never waver, and he remains her most devoted supporter. His relationship with Emeraude is also central to his character, as her role as Pillar came at the cost of their sibling bond. His interactions with the other Magic Knights, particularly Hikaru and Umi, develop from cautious distrust into mutual respect, and he cooperates with other warriors such as Lantis during the conflict in the second season.
Ferio undergoes meaningful development over the course of the anime. He begins as a mysterious and somewhat untrustworthy wandering swordsman who acts mainly for his own purposes, even briefly betraying the Magic Knights' trust in an attempt to reach Zagato before ultimately saving them. Through his experiences with the Knights and the recovery of his lost memories, he matures into a figure who accepts his princely heritage and his sister's tragic fate, and he commits himself to a future alongside Fuu rather than clinging to the past.
His notable abilities are purely physical, as he does not use magic. He is an exceptionally skilled swordsman who carries a broadsword nearly as tall as he is, and despite his lean build he moves with great speed and strength, cutting through powerful enemies with his blade. His combat skill was honed through years of wandering through dangerous, monster-infested regions, making him a self-made fighter who relies on quick reflexes, sharp instincts, and clever tactics rather than formal training or supernatural power. In addition to his swordsmanship, his paired jeweled orbs serve as a practical tool, allowing him to communicate with Fuu across distances throughout the story.
