Description
Fuû Hooji is one of the three central protagonists of the Magic Knight Rayearth anime, specifically the character who embodies the element of wind. She is a Japanese student who attends a private school for intellectually gifted children and is a member of her school's archery club. Physically, Fuû is recognizable by her shoulder-length light brown or blonde hair, green eyes, and her signature pair of glasses.

In terms of personality, Fuû stands out as the calmest and most analytical member of the trio. She is consistently polite, often addressing even monsters and enemies with respectful honorifics, and serves as the primary strategist and the voice of reason for the group. While she always seems to wear a gentle smile, she has a sharp and logical mind, and she often makes blunt, matter-of-fact observations that can be surprisingly humorous. Her power is rooted in her intelligence and her deep-seated compassion; her first magical spell is a healing wind, demonstrating that her core motivation is to protect her friends rather than to attack.

During the events of Magic Knight Rayearth 2, Fuû’s character is shaped by the heavy emotional consequences of the first season. Having returned to her normal life on Earth, she is deeply troubled by the fact that she and her friends were forced to kill Princess Emeraude in order to save the world of Cephiro. Her cheerful demeanor becomes more subdued, and she visibly struggles with guilt and sadness, losing some of her previous enthusiasm for everyday hobbies like video games. Despite this internal turmoil, she remains fiercely dedicated to her friends, Hikaru and Umi, and when they are summoned back to the crumbling world of Cephiro, she accepts the mission to protect it with a quiet but firm resolve.

Her role in the second season expands as she is often separated from the main action to deal with the invading forces from other worlds. In a notable storyline, Fuû is captured by Lady Aska, the young ruler of the nation of Fahren. Unlike a typical action hero, Fuû relies on her wits and skills to secure her freedom, challenging Aska to an archery contest. After winning the match, she does not simply escape; she also speaks to Aska with honesty and empathy, convincing her to abandon her ambition to become the Pillar of Cephiro by revealing the lonely and loveless reality of that role.

Her key relationships continue to develop, most significantly with the swordsman Ferio. Throughout the second arc, Fuû deepens her romantic feelings for him, but she is also tortured by the knowledge that she was part of the group that killed his sister, Princess Emeraude. She must navigate this guilt while growing closer to him, ultimately finding that his feelings for her do not waver despite the tragedy. While Hikaru remains the central focus of the second season, Fuû proves to be an indispensable asset to the team, often acting as a diplomat and a healer rather than just a fighter.

As the Magic Knight of Wind, Fuû’s notable abilities are largely defensive and supportive, perfectly reflecting her personality. Her spells include Winds of Healing to cure her allies, Winds of Protection to create a barrier, and Winds of Admonishment to immobilize her enemies. For offensive purposes, she uses attack spells such as Emerald Typhoon and the more powerful Emerald Cyclone, which creates razor-sharp gusts of wind. In combat, she is exceptionally skilled with a bow and arrow, a talent she developed in her school club. Her primary weapon evolves from a bow into the Escudo sword, a massive blade that becomes impossibly heavy for anyone other than Fuû to lift. She also pilots the Rune God Windam, a giant warrior who takes the form of a majestic phoenix, reflecting her own name and elemental affinity.
