Description
Ancêtre Chang Ang is a supporting character in the second story arc of Magic Knight Rayearth. He serves as the Prime Minister of the kingdom of Fahren and acts as the personal tutor and chief advisor to its young and impulsive ruler, Princess Aska. Chang Ang is an elderly man whose appearance and demeanor suggest a lifetime of wisdom and experience, which he has dedicated to the service of the Fahren royal family.
His primary role in the narrative is as a guiding figure for Princess Aska. While his station is one of high authority within Fahren, his function in the story is largely defined by his relationship with the princess. Chang Ang is a stern but deeply caring mentor who strives to temper Aska’s childish whims with reason and responsibility. He is often seen reacting with exasperation or dramatic dismay to her latest selfish demand or reckless plan, such as her initial desire to conquer Cephiro to turn it into a land of sweets. Despite his frequent frustration, his actions are always motivated by a profound sense of loyalty to his country and a genuine, paternal affection for the princess he is charged with raising. His patience is legendary, yet he is not without limits, capable of firm opposition when he believes Aska is about to make a grave mistake. He is also a proud and dignified man, carrying himself with the bearing expected of a lord of the court, even when his charge is making his duties incredibly difficult.
In the conflict for control of Cephiro following the fall of its Pillar, Chang Ang accompanies Princess Aska on the campaign. He does not endorse her frivolous reasons for the invasion, but he complies with his duty to serve and protect her, continuing her education in the high arts of Illusion magic during their journey. He provides a voice of caution and wisdom amidst the chaos of the rival nations' attacks, often warning Aska against using powerful magical techniques before she is ready. His most significant role is as a moral anchor for Aska, and his proudest moment comes when she demonstrates genuine maturity. After a confrontation with Autozam’s Eagle Vision, Aska decides to continue toward Cephiro not to claim the Pillar’s power, but to learn from Emeraude’s fate, realizing her heart already belongs to Fahren. Seeing this growth, Chang Ang commends her with a tender gesture, finally able to offer his complete and unreserved support for her cause.
Chang Ang’s key relationships are centered on the Fahren court. His bond with Princess Aska is the most developed, a dynamic of grumbling teacher and willful student that slowly evolves into mutual respect. He also works closely with Sang Yung, a young boy who is Aska’s personal advisor and of a similar age to the princess. Chang Ang trusts Sang Yung and relies on him, understanding the difficult position the boy is often placed in when caught between the princess’s tantrums and his own warnings. As for abilities, Chang Ang is a scholar and a master of Fahren’s pseudo-Chinese magic known as High Illusions, though he is never seen casting any spells himself. His power lies in his deep knowledge of this art, which he attempts to teach to Aska, and his great wisdom as an imperial adviser. He believes such magic should only be used in the most pressing circumstances, which is why he is so horrified when Aska frivolously abuses it. Ultimately, his greatest strength is his unyielding dedication and his role as the steady, guiding force behind the throne of Fahren.
