Description
Luce is an alternative name used in some language adaptations for Hikaru Shidou, one of the three main protagonists of Magic Knight Rayearth 2. In the story, Luce is a fourteen-year-old eighth‑grade student from Tokyo who, along with her friends Umi and Fuu, is summoned to the magical world of Cephiro a second time. She comes from a family that runs a kendo dojo, and she has trained in swordsmanship from a young age. She is physically small for her age and is often mistaken for being younger, but her demeanor is anything but timid. Luce has bright red hair and red eyes, and her element is fire, which she uses in spells such as Arrow of Flame and Crimson Lightning. Her magical armor and weapons are associated with the fire‑based Rune‑God Rayearth.

Personality wise, Luce is energetic, cheerful, and optimistic, with a strong sense of justice and unwavering loyalty to her friends. She tends to act on instinct and emotion rather than careful planning, and she is often the most eager of the three to take on challenges. Despite her generally upbeat nature, she is also deeply sensitive and can fall into periods of guilt and despair, particularly after the events of the first season, where she and the other Magic Knights were forced to kill Princess Emeraude. This trauma lingers into the second season and influences her motivations.

In Magic Knight Rayearth 2, Luce’s primary motivation is to protect Cephiro from collapse after the loss of its Pillar. She is driven by a desire to prevent others from suffering the same fate as Emeraude, and she gradually comes to oppose the entire Pillar system. She develops a romantic relationship with Lantis, the younger brother of the previous antagonist Zagato, and also forms a deep friendship with Eagle Vision of Autozam, a rival candidate for the new Pillar. These relationships test her convictions and help her grow into a more mature and resolute person.

Luce’s role in the story evolves from that of a reluctant hero bound by duty to a decisive leader who challenges the fundamental laws of Cephiro. She is selected as one of the two final candidates to become the new Pillar, and during the final confrontation, she refuses to accept a system that forces a single person to sacrifice their own happiness. With the support of her friends, she uses her authority as the new Pillar to abolish the Pillar system entirely, allowing Cephiro to function through the collective will of its people.

Her notable abilities include fire‑based magic, expert swordsmanship from her kendo training, and the power to pilot the Rune‑God Rayearth. She also displays strong willpower and emotional resilience, which ultimately enable her to reshape Cephiro’s destiny. Throughout the second season, Luce struggles with guilt over Emeraude’s death, but she overcomes it by reaffirming her bonds with Umi, Fuu, and the people of Cephiro. Her development culminates in a selfless act of mercy when she saves Eagle Vision from disappearing, despite the risk to herself. In the end, she returns to Earth alongside her friends, but she remains connected to Cephiro and its future.
