Description
Joco, known as Chocolove McDonell in the original Japanese version, is a character who enters the Shaman Fight as a member of the team led by Tao Ren. He is an African American boy of average height, easily recognized by his large afro hairstyle. His typical attire includes an open white dress shirt and a wrap worn around his lower body, switching to a black and gold vest for battles. Born on October 2, 1985, his past is marked by tragedy, as his parents were murdered on Christmas Day when he was young. This trauma led him to a life on the streets where he eventually became the leader of a gang called Shaft. On another Christmas, he and his gang killed a man, an act that would haunt him deeply.
The defining moment of his life came after this killing, when he encountered an old shaman named Orona. Using his spirit, Mic, Orona not only dodged Joco’s gunfire but also defeated him, all while making a pun. Orona’s philosophy was that laughter could save the world, and he saw potential in the young gang leader. Joco became Orona’s student and inherited his guardian ghost, Mic the Jaguar, after his master’s death. Inspired by Orona, Joco’s primary goal in life is to become both the Shaman King and a great comedian, firmly believing that laughter is the best medicine.
Joco’s personality is almost completely defined by his relentless pursuit of comedy. He constantly tells jokes and puns to his companions, though they are notoriously unfunny, often nonsensical, or reliant on mispronunciations. This typically results in the other characters chasing him or beating him up in frustration, with Tao Ren even resorting to poking Joco’s nose with his weapons. Despite the negative reactions, Joco never gives up, and his persistence has been noted by Ren, who once admitted to being jealous of Joco’s courage to tell such obviously corny jokes. On rare occasions, characters like Yoh Asakura have let out a light chuckle, while others like Tamao and Pirika have been known to laugh hysterically once they understood the punchline.
Within the story’s second round of the Shaman Fight, Joco serves as a powerful member of Team Ren. His role is not just as a fighter but also as a source of unexpected tactics, using his humor as a weapon to distract and weaken his opponents. His past proves to be a major obstacle when he is confronted by the spirits of the man he killed, who are being used by Redseb and Seyram. To atone for this sin, Joco makes the profound decision to blind himself. This act of penance leads to a surge in his other senses and culminates in a period of training in hell, from which he returns with a new, immense power.
Throughout his journey, Joco forms several key relationships. His bond with his late master Orona is the foundation of his character, shaping his goals and philosophy. He also shares a close partnership with his primary spirit, Mic, with whom he fuses to create a unique and powerful Oversoul. After losing his sight, he gains a second spirit of a higher order named Pascal Avaf, which grants him the incredible armored Oversoul, Jaguarman. As a member of the Five Elemental Warriors, Joco becomes attuned to the Spirit of Wind, and his furyoku level soars to approximately 197,500, making him the most powerful among their group. His powers primarily involve making spirits laugh, which leaves them vulnerable to attack, and his evolved abilities grant him superhuman speed, the power to walk on air, and the capacity to control wind to erode his surroundings.
