Description
Elissa, more commonly referred to as Eliza, is a central figure in the Shaman King narrative as the wife and primary guardian ghost of the necromancer Faust VIII. Her background is one of tragedy and deep devotion. Since childhood, Eliza suffered from a fatal disease, and Faust VIII dedicated himself to his medical studies to find a cure for her. After years of effort, he succeeded in healing her, and the two married, opening a medical clinic together to help others. Their peaceful life was brutally cut short when a burglar broke into the clinic and fatally shot Eliza, who was alone on the premises at the time. At the time of her death, she was twenty-six years old.

Eliza's personality is most prominently defined by her profound love for her husband and her gentle, caring nature. Though she appears as a silent and ethereal presence for much of the story, her actions convey unwavering support and loyalty. As a spirit bound to Faust, she endures being used in combat, not out of a desire for battle, but because she understands his ultimate goal is to find a way to bring her back to life. Her love is selfless; her greatest pain comes not from the attacks she endures, but from witnessing her husband suffer or be injured in combat. She is a character whose strength lies in her emotional resilience and her role as Faust's sole reason for continuing his journey.

In the context of the story, Eliza serves as the core motivation for Faust VIII’s actions. His entire purpose for entering the Shaman Fight and seeking the title of Shaman King is to gain enough power to fully revive her. She functions not only as his emotional anchor but also as his primary fighting spirit, or guardian ghost. Her presence allows Faust to utilize his powerful necromantic abilities and Over Souls, making her indispensable to his role as a combatant. Initially, she is a mostly silent and spectral figure, but as Faust grows stronger and his furyoku increases, she becomes more lifelike and capable of independent speech and action.

The key relationship in Eliza's existence is, of course, with Faust VIII. She was his first and only true love, and their bond transcends death. Faust is obsessive and reckless in his methods, but Eliza's calming influence serves as a tether to his humanity. Another significant relationship is with Anna Kyoyama, the protagonist Yoh Asakura's fiancée. It is Anna who uses her powerful abilities to summon Eliza’s spirit fully back to the earthly plane, allowing Faust to communicate with and see her directly once again. This act deepens Faust's loyalty to Yoh's team and provides him with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

Eliza's development is closely tied to Faust’s own growth as a shaman. Early on, she exists in a fragmented, almost doll-like state as Faust attempts to preserve her physical body. After Anna’s intervention, she returns as a proper spirit, which significantly strengthens Faust, as he now possesses a true human spirit as his guardian. Throughout the series, she evolves from a silent symbol of loss into a more active, protective presence. While Faust learns techniques that can resurrect the dead, it is ultimately impossible to restore her original body, giving their story a bittersweet resolution where she remains a spirit bound to him.

As a spirit, Eliza possesses several notable abilities primarily manifested through Faust’s necromancy. Through the Over Soul technique Mephisto E, Eliza’s spirit grows to a massive size and transforms into a demonic-appearing entity. In this form, she is enveloped in a protective layer of furyoku that simulates flesh, and she wields a variety of medical tools as weapons, including scalpels and syringes. Another advanced Over Soul technique is Elisa Operien, which transforms her into a figure with an operating table and a large lamp, granting Faust the power to heal almost any injury. She is also used for offensive attacks, such as Ample Hagen, where she launches numerous projectiles at an opponent. Despite her gentle nature, as Faust’s spirit ally, she is a formidable force in battle.
