Description
Kanna Bismarch is a character from the German Bismarch main branch, a family of distinction, born on October 26, 1977. As an infant, she unconsciously used her own body to channel spirits, a condition that caused her to vomit ectoplasm, a visible spiritual energy. This unusual ability forced her to spend her entire childhood isolated within her family's castle, as her worried parents sought help from exorcists and clerics across Europe, none of whom could provide a cure. Despite her strange affliction, she was content simply being loved by her parents until they died in a mysterious accident. Following their deaths, greedy relatives and lawyers swarmed the castle, stripping the young Kanna of her inheritance and leaving her with nothing. In this moment of utter despair, the powerful shaman Asakura Hao appeared before her and burned the castle and the corrupt lawyers to the ground, fulfilling her secret wish for revenge. This act of liberation cemented her undying loyalty to him, and she became a shaman under his wing, finally able to see the world outside her former prison.

Kanna has a serious and reserved demeanor that is easily provoked into anger. She openly admits to hating children and, like many of Hao's followers, holds a deep disdain for humanity. Despite her cold and sometimes sarcastic exterior, she is fiercely loyal to Hao and deeply caring towards her two closest companions, Marion Phauna and Matilda Matisse. Having been orphaned herself, Kanna took on the role of a protective older sister to the younger girls, forming a close-knit trio that would become known as Team Hana-Gumi. She is known to be quite thoughtful, but her patience is limited, and she can react violently when provoked. A notable and persistent habit is her addiction to cigarettes, which she almost always has in her mouth. While her spiritual abilities prevent severe health consequences like cancer, she still suffers from withdrawal symptoms such as aggression and headaches if she cannot smoke.

As a member of Team Hana-Gumi, Kanna serves as one of Hao's primary followers in the Shaman Fight tournament. Her motivation is almost singularly tied to Hao, believing in his vision for a new world and fighting to help him achieve it. Her role in the story is primarily as an antagonist, acting as an obstacle for the main characters. In the second round of the tournament, she and her team fought against Tamao Tamamura and Tao Jun. During this battle, she demonstrated her combat prowess by summoning her guardian ghost, Ashcroft, to critically injure Tao Jun's ally, Lee Pyron. The intervention of Yoh Asakura's father, Mikihisa Asakura, ended the fight; he effortlessly dismantled Kanna's Over Soul, slapped her and her teammates, and admonished her for her smoking habit, telling her it was not good for her if she ever wanted to have children.

Her journey takes a significant turn during the invasion of the Patch Village's plants. She, along with Marion and Matilda, is killed by the shaman Peyote Diaz. They are later resurrected by Lady Sati, an event that causes them to reconsider their allegiance. Following their resurrection, they switch sides and join Yoh Asakura's faction to fight against Hao's remaining forces. Years after the tournament concludes, Kanna and her teammates leave their life of combat behind. They attend high school together and eventually become waitresses at the Funbari Onsen, where they are collectively known as the Hana-Gumi Waitresses. In this later period, she is often scolded by the inn's manager, Tamao Tamamura, for smoking indoors and skipping work.

Kanna is a shaman whose powers are uniquely tied to her ectoplasm, a spiritual smoke that is even visible to non-shamans. She can use this smoke to grab, restrain, and interact with both people and spirits. Her primary ability is channeling her guardian ghost, Ashcroft, the spirit of a medieval knight loyal to the Bismarch family. Ashcroft is a powerful spirit of the Human Class, and Kanna uses the smoke from her cigarette as the medium to materialize him. Typically, Ashcroft manifests in a large suit of armor, wielding a lance with great speed and strength. One of his known techniques is Burst Joust, where he pierces an opponent and expands the smoke within them. In the official data books, her furyoku, a measure of spiritual power, is listed as 7,500 initially, but grows to 58,000 by the end of the series.
