Description
Lyserg Diethel is a British shaman and a traditional dowser who participates in the Shaman Fight with the primary goal of avenging the murder of his parents. Born on May 17, 1986, in England, Lyserg was raised by his father Liam Diethel, a detective who used dowsing in his investigations. When Lyserg was six years old, Asakura Hao appeared at his home on his birthday, killed his parents for refusing to join him, and set the house on fire. Lyserg arrived in time to witness the deaths and unsuccessfully tried to fight Hao, who dismissed him as insignificant. This traumatic event defined Lyserg's entire life, driving him to become stronger and seek revenge.

Following the deaths of his parents, Lyserg lived with his maternal grandfather, who tried to train him in dowsing and shamanism, but Lyserg refused to learn from anyone other than his father. After seeing his grandfather cry while looking at a photograph of his parents, Lyserg resolved to train hard and honor his father's memory. His grandfather eventually died, and Lyserg was taken in by a wealthy man named Oknox, who turned out to be involved in human trafficking. Oknox killed another boy, Wat Hudson, and nearly killed Lyserg before Hao intervened and killed Oknox. Lyserg then traveled across England searching for his parents' killer.

Lyserg is intelligent, calm, and generally kindhearted, but he possesses a deep-seated and passionate hatred for Hao. He can become emotionally volatile at the mere mention or sight of Hao. Despite his kind nature, he initially displays the qualities of an anti-hero, willing to use lethal force against his target. He loves reading detective and mystery stories, a trait inherited from his father. His appearance is notably androgynous; upon first meeting him, Ryunosuke Umemiya mistook him for a girl. He has light green hair and green eyes.

Motivationally, Lyserg's twin goals are to become strong enough to kill Hao and to become a great detective like his father. He enters the Shaman Fight to achieve these ends. In the early stages of the tournament, he tests Yoh Asakura and his group by attacking them, hospitalizing both Ren and Horohoro. After Yoh subdues him and explains that partners do not harm each other, Lyserg calms down and joins Yoh's team for a time. However, as the story progresses, he begins to doubt whether Yoh's merciful philosophy is sufficient to defeat Hao. When the extremist group X-Laws appears, led by Marco and Iron Maiden Jeanne, Lyserg is drawn to their single-minded goal of killing Hao. He leaves Yoh's group and becomes a member of the X-Laws, competing as part of Team X-I.

Lyserg's relationships are complex. He maintains a genuine friendship with Yoh and the others even after joining the X-Laws, and he weeps when Yoh forfeits the Shaman Fight to save Tao Ren. He also participates in rescuing Chocolove McDonnell when he is in danger. Despite his allegiance to the X-Laws, Lyserg struggles with their ruthless methods, as he cannot bring himself to kill innocent people. His internal conflict is between his hatred for Hao and his innate kindness, which is reinforced by his friendship with Yoh. Eventually, after Iron Maiden Jeanne and Yoh reach a mutual understanding, Lyserg finds inner peace and reconciles his loyalty, allowing him to be himself within the X-Laws. Marco also becomes less harsh with him.

Developmentally, Lyserg undergoes significant growth. He is recognized as the most intelligent of the Five Warriors chosen by Lady Sati. During a training period in hell, he becomes the second strongest of the five, behind only Chocolove. He masters a new Oversoul that combines his two guardian spirits. In the final battle, he receives the Spirit of Fire from Hao and uses it against the Shaman King, and he is able to see his parents again. After the Shaman Fight, he attends Oxford University, becomes a police officer, and uses his shamanic abilities and combat training to capture criminals, eventually being promoted to the British Secret Intelligence Agency. He fulfills his dream of becoming a detective, honoring his father's legacy.

Notable abilities include his skill as a dowser, which allows him to find people or objects using a crystal pendulum. He can also use dowsing for spirit control. His primary guardian spirit is a poppy fairy named Morphea (called Morphine in Japanese, Chloe in the English anime). In the manga, he never abandons Morphea; when he receives the archangel Zeruel from the X-Laws, he fuses both spirits into an armor Oversoul called Mastema Dolkeem, which represents a fiery determination to prevent his grudge from consuming him. In the anime adaptation, he discards Morphea to gain control of Zeruel but later reunites with her to form a similar armor. His Furyoku (spiritual power) reaches 170,500, the second highest among the Five Warriors.
