Description
Kasumi Tani is a central character in the anime Hand Maid May. She is the eighteen-year-old daughter of the landlady of the Kasumi House, a small wooden apartment building where the protagonist, Kazuya Saotome, lives. Her apartment is directly across from Kazuya’s, and she has famously placed a long ladder between their balconies to serve as a bridge for visiting him.

Kasumi is a college student, but she is highly active and athletic, with a particular passion for baseball. In her spare time, she serves as a coach for a local little league baseball team, wearing a uniform with the number thirty-three. Her personality is often described as a tomboy; for instance, she occasionally refers to herself using "boku," a pronoun typically used by males in Japanese, which highlights her straightforward and less traditionally demure demeanor.

Despite her athletic and somewhat boyish traits, Kasumi possesses a very kind and caring nature. She is a close friend to Kazuya and often demonstrates her favoritism by allowing him to pay his rent late. Her most defining characteristic, however, is her romantic interest in Kazuya. She is unafraid to be bold in her attempts to capture his attention, frequently visiting his room wearing revealing or skimpy clothing in the hope that he will finally notice her feelings and advance their relationship. She views the various cyberdolls that come into Kazuya's life, especially the kind and devoted May, as friendly but serious rivals for his affections.

Kasumi’s role in the story is that of a primary human anchor and a source of romantic tension. As the most prominent human female character among a cast that includes several cyberdolls, she represents a possible "normal" future for Kazuya. Her apartment often serves as a refuge for the cyberdolls who decide not to follow their original programming, and she maintains a good relationship with them, acting as a supportive and elder-sisterly figure, particularly to the child-like cyberdoll Rena.

Her development throughout the series is closely tied to her jealousy and insecurity. She is confident in her friendship with Kazuya, but the arrival of the human-sized May causes her significant emotional distress. This culminates during a typhoon in episode eight, where she hits an emotional low and runs away. When Kazuya finds her at a playground, they have a heartfelt conversation. Through this, she finally understands that his feelings for her are still strong and have not been replaced by his connection to May. This moment of reassurance helps lift the darkness in her heart, and she later reconciles with May, solidifying their friendship. While she continues to hold feelings for Kazuya, she learns to navigate her relationship with him and the cyberdolls with a renewed sense of understanding and acceptance. Beyond her role as a romantic interest and friend, Kasumi’s notable abilities include her baseball coaching skills and her proficiency with a needle and thread, as she is shown sewing clothes for the tiny, doll-sized May.
