Description
Centarumon is a Champion level Digimon with the appearance of a centaur, combining a humanoid upper body with the lower body of a beast. Its body is covered by a hard, secreted substance that offers strong protection, and its right arm has fused with its primary weapon, a built-in cannon. Distinctive features include exhaust pipes on its back and a helmet that typically reveals only a single eye. As a Beast Man type Digimon with a Data attribute, its design reflects its proud and independent nature; it is known to be extremely prideful and hates being ordered around or restrained.
The physical capabilities of Centarumon are considerable. The pipes on its back can emit high-pressure vapor, allowing it to propel itself at near-sonic speeds for short bursts in a technique called Jet Gallop. Its primary offensive ability, the Hunting Cannon or Solar Ray, is a powerful laser beam fired from the cannon on its right arm. This attack is described as being almost impossible to evade, but it consumes a massive amount of energy, so Centarumon generally avoids unnecessary battles.
In Digimon Adventure, a significant Centarumon appears as the guardian of an ancient temple built to honor the DigiDestined. When first encountered, it is under the control of a Black Gear placed by Devimon, making it an enemy. After the Black Gear is destroyed by the combined efforts of Kabuterimon and Togemon, Centarumon regains its senses and fulfills its duty as a guardian. It reveals crucial information to the DigiDestined, explaining the history and purpose of the Digivices as sacred devices meant to guide the Digital World with the light of goodness. This moment is vital for their understanding of their mission.
A key relationship in this early story arc is with its charge, the temple, and the knowledge it protects. After being freed, it shows no hostility and instead becomes an ally and source of wisdom. However, its role is brief; it is quickly overwhelmed while bravely defending the children from Leomon, who is also under Devimon's control. Despite being no match for Leomon, Centarumon fights to protect the DigiDestined until the combined light of their Digivices drives the corrupted warrior away. Later, its vigilance continues as it is the one to discover the Wall of Fire and report its existence to the elder Gennai.
The character appears in other parts of the broader Digimon universe as well. A different Centarumon serves as a partner Digimon to an American DigiDestined named Maria. In this role, it helps to escort rampaging Digimon in New York City and later joins the final battle against the villain MaloMyotismon, lending its strength to the assembled DigiDestined forces. Other appearances, such as in Digimon Frontier, have it acting in groups, often as a guardian or follower of a more powerful Digimon like Saggitarimon. Throughout these varied storylines, Centarumon consistently exhibits traits of a guardian, a loyal ally, and a powerful if reluctant, warrior, whose pride is matched only by its sense of duty.
