Description
Apocalymon is the ultimate antagonist of the first season of the Digimon Adventure anime, revealed to be the true source of the chaos that plagued the Digital World. Unlike a typical Digimon, Apocalymon is not a single entity but a gestalt being, formed from the lingering regrets, jealousy, and despair of countless Digimon who perished because they were unable to survive the natural process of Digivolution. Condemned to exist in an empty void of darkness, this being was forced to watch the world of light, where other Digimon lived in happiness, which fueled an immense and bitter hatred. This tormented and sadistic soul seeks to twist both the Digital and Real Worlds into living underworlds, to justify its own suffering and to rule over all existence.

In the story, Apocalymon is the hidden mastermind pulling the strings from the shadows. Its existence itself generates chaos in the Digital World, and it was responsible for creating the Dark Masters, the four powerful Mega-level Digimon who served as the primary antagonists for a significant portion of the series. Only after the DigiDestined defeat Piedmon, the last of the Dark Masters, does Apocalymon finally reveal itself. It appears in a strange, empty subspace, confronting the children directly. Its personality is defined by its all-consuming despair and insanity. In the original Japanese version, Apocalymon speaks of itself in the plural, using "we" to reflect its nature as a collective of lost souls, a reference to the Biblical demon Legion. The English dub adaptation gives it a dark sense of humor, where it will make a joke or laugh but then quickly stop, reminding itself that it is "supposed to be depressed".

Apocalymon serves as the final test for the DigiDestined, representing a direct opposition to the themes of hope, evolution, and the future. Its role is to bring absolute despair. Upon its appearance, it demonstrates its power by using the signature attacks of all the major villains the children had previously defeated, including Devimon, Etemon, Myotismon, MetalSeadramon, and Machinedramon. It then employs its most devastating ability, Reverse Digivolve, which forces the partner Digimon to degenerate back to their weakest Rookie forms. Following this, it destroys the Tags and Crests, the very items the children believed were essential for their Digimon to evolve, before deleting the children and their partners entirely, sending them to a desolate Data World. This act is meant to prove that their hope is futile.

The children's development comes from overcoming this final obstacle. In the Data World, they realize that the power of the Crests—representing virtues like courage, friendship, and love—was never in the physical items but had always resided within their own hearts. This realization allows them to return to the Digital World, and their Digimon partner digivolve once more to their ultimate forms. In a final battle, the other Digimon destroy Apocalymon's many claws, allowing WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon to destroy its main humanoid body. However, Apocalymon reveals that this form is just a part of it and, in a final act of spite, initiates its ultimate technique, Total Annihilation. This attack is a suicidal self-detonation with enough force to wipe out both the Digital and Real Worlds simultaneously. The children, refusing to give up, use their Digivices to create a barrier that contains the explosion, causing Apocalymon to destroy only itself. Its death leads to the reformation of the Digital World.

Among Apocalymon's most notable abilities is its power to use the techniques of other Digimon, as each of its claws can transform into the upper body of a past enemy to launch their specific attack. Its other key attacks include Reverse Digivolve, the Darkness Zone which deletes opponents, and the aforementioned Total Annihilation. Even in defeat, Apocalymon's influence lingers. A small fragment of its data found its way into a Digi-Egg that would later hatch into Meicoomon, a central character in the sequel series Digimon Adventure tri. This residual data is the source of a powerful infection that causes Digimon to go berserk, demonstrating that the despair Apocalymon embodied continues to be a threat long after its destruction.
