Description
Kari Yagami, known as Hikari Yagami in the original Japanese version, is a central character introduced as the younger sister of Taichi Yagami. Her first contact with the Digital World occurred years before the main adventure, when she was a young child living in Hikarigaoka. A Digital Egg emerged from her family's computer, eventually hatching into a Koromon that she and Taichi befriended. This led to a battle between the evolved Greymon and a Parrotmon, an event she remembered clearly even when her brother had forgotten it. A subsequent incident where she became seriously ill with pneumonia after her brother encouraged her to play outside had a profound effect on their relationship, instilling in Taichi a strong sense of protectiveness and causing Kari to habitually hide her own suffering to avoid worrying others.

Due to a cold, Kari was unable to join the initial summer camp that transported the other chosen children to the Digital World. She is later identified as the eighth and final chosen child, a fact that the antagonist Myotismon also seeks to uncover, leading him to launch an attack on Tokyo. Her partner Digimon is Gatomon, a champion-level holy beast who had been forced to serve under Myotismon but felt an unexplained attraction to Kari. After being united, the grief Kari feels at the sacrifice of the Digimon Wizardmon fully awakens her Crest of Light, allowing Gatomon to evolve into the angelic Angewomon for the first time.

Kari is defined by her gentle, compassionate, and selfless personality. She consistently seeks the best in others and avoids conflict when possible, yet demonstrates remarkable courage and resolve in drastic situations. Her defining trait is a deep-seated desire to protect others and put their well-being before her own, a quality rooted in her childhood illness that makes her appear sweet and innocent but also somewhat reserved. This sensitivity, represented by her Crest of Light, gives her a powerful connection to positive emotions but also makes her uniquely vulnerable to the forces of darkness. This duality is a key aspect of her character; her light can be a source of great power and healing, but her despair has the potential to destabilize the Digital World, as seen when her emotional trauma contributed to the creation of the dark Ordinemon.

Her role in the story evolves from the protected little sister to an integral member of the group. She shares a particularly strong bond with Takeru Takaishi, known as T.K., as they are the youngest of the original group and their Digimon partners, Angewomon and Angemon, share an angelic theme. In Digimon Adventure 02, three years later, she has matured into a healthier and more active girl who develops new interests like photography. She and Takeru act as experienced mentors to the new generation of chosen children, including Davis Motomiya, who has a noticeable crush on her. Her friendship with Yolei Inoue proves especially important, as it allows her to become more expressive and overcome her fear of darkness, culminating in their Digimon performing Jogress evolution to become Silphymon.

Throughout her adventures, Kari displays several notable abilities connected to her Crest of Light. She has the unique power to emit light from her body, which can heal corrupted Digimon and inspire them to break free from mind control. She also possesses an enhanced sensitivity to the presence of darkness, sometimes allowing her to perceive or be drawn into dark dimensions like the Dark Ocean. While her partner Gatomon typically remains in her champion form, they can achieve higher evolutions: Angewomon for a powerful angelic form, the armor evolution Nefertimon using the Digi-Egg of Light, and in later series, the ultimate form Holydramon. In the epilogue set twenty-five years later, Kari fulfills her dream of becoming a kindergarten teacher, is married, and has a son who is partnered with a Plotmon, reflecting her lifelong nurturing nature and her wish for humans and Digimon to coexist peacefully.
