Description
Bukamon is the In-Training II form of the Digimon that partners with Joe Kido in Digimon Adventure. As a Lesser Digimon, its name is thought to derive from an onomatopoeia for floating, which reflects its typical hovering movement. In terms of appearance, Bukamon resembles the infant stage of an aquatic dinosaur, possessing a small, rounded body with flippers and a distinctive horn or fin on its head. Its movements are noted to be as clever and agile as those of a seahorse.

The personality of Bukamon presents a notable contrast to its previous form. While its prior evolution, Pichimon, is known for a friendly disposition, this trait completely vanishes upon evolution. Bukamon is characterized by a strong sense of caution and timidity, as it will quickly flee when other creatures approach it. This behavior suggests a survival instinct common in many young digital life forms, prioritizing evasion over confrontation.

Bukamon's primary motivation is rooted in its basic nature as an In-Training Digimon. It exists in a developmental stage where survival and growth are paramount. Its actions are largely driven by the need to protect itself from potential threats. This caution is not just behavioral but has a physical basis; its outer skin has not yet developed the capacity to withstand the high water pressure and low temperatures of the deep sea, which limits the duration and depth of its dives. This physical limitation influences its interactions with its environment and contributes to its wary nature.

Within the story of Digimon Adventure, Bukamon serves as the initial form of Joe Kido's partner Digimon. It is the direct stage before evolving into the more capable and outgoing Rookie-level Digimon, Gomamon. This role is crucial as it represents the beginning of the bond between Joe and his partner. In a moment of danger during an early battle against a powerful enemy Digimon, Bukamon undergoes a permanent evolution to Gomamon, marking a significant step in its development and solidifying its role as a protector for its human partner.

The most significant relationship for Bukamon is with its human partner, Joe Kido. As an In-Training Digimon, its connection with Joe is in its most nascent stage, but it is this bond that enables the evolution to Gomamon. The relationship is defined by trust and the need for protection, with the evolution occurring specifically to shield Joe from harm. Outside of this primary partnership, Bukamon is part of the larger group of partner Digimon, though its interactions are less defined due to its brief time in this form.

Bukamon's development is intrinsically linked to its evolution line. Its time as an active character is short, as its primary narrative function is to evolve into Gomamon early in the series. This evolution is a permanent change that represents growth, maturity, and the strengthening of its bond with Joe. The character shows no development of its own beyond this point, as it reverts to this form only in specific circumstances after having achieved higher evolution levels, such as when its Champion form, Ikkakumon, or Ultimate form, Zudomon, devolves. In these instances, its return to the Bukamon stage underscores its status as the foundational, resting state of the Digimon.

Notable abilities for a Digimon of its level include several bubble-based attacks. Its primary special move is Bubble Blow, also known as Bubbles or Air Bubbles, where it fires pink bubbles from its mouth. Other variations of this attack include Froth Bubbles and Acid Bubbles, the latter of which can be used to intimidate an opponent. While not powerful in a combat sense, these abilities are typical for an In-Training Digimon and serve as its primary means of defense or distraction.
