TV-Series
Description
Asuka Langley Sôryû is designated the Second Child and the pilot of the Evangelion Unit-02, a giant bio-machine created to fight beings known as Angels. She is introduced several episodes into the series as a new colleague and rival for the protagonist, Shinji Ikari. Asuka is a prodigy of mixed heritage, possessing American citizenship while being born in Germany and raised there, which gives her fluency in German, Japanese, and likely English. At just fourteen years old, she has already graduated from a university in Germany, showcasing her high intelligence and academic drive. Physically, she is known for her fiery red hair, often styled with distinctive A10 nerve clips, and blue eyes.

Her personality is outwardly marked by extreme confidence, arrogance, and a competitive, fiery temper. She is loud, brash, and takes great pride in her abilities as an Evangelion pilot, frequently declaring herself the best and mocking Shinji for his passivity and perceived lack of manliness. Her catchphrase is often "Are you stupid?" which she directs at those who fail to meet her high standards. However, this aggressive and boastful exterior is a carefully constructed facade. Beneath the surface lies a deeply vulnerable and insecure individual, whose self-worth is almost entirely dependent on her success as a pilot and the praise she receives from others. This behavior is a psychological defense mechanism developed in response to a profound childhood trauma.

Asuka's core motivation stems from a desperate need for self-affirmation and to be seen as an adult. At age four, she witnessed her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Sôryû, a scientist working on the Evangelion project, suffer a mental breakdown following a contact experiment with Unit-02. Her mother subsequently became convinced a doll was her real daughter, completely rejecting the real Asuka. Shortly after Asuka was chosen as a pilot, she found her mother's corpse after she committed suicide, hanging herself and the doll. From that moment, Asuka swore she would never cry again and vowed to prove her existence by being perfect and independent, never relying on anyone else so she would never be abandoned again. Piloting the Eva is her primary tool for this, as it gets her noticed and makes her feel powerful and in control.

In the story, Asuka serves as a foil to the more withdrawn Shinji Ikari and the passive Rei Ayanami. Her arrival injects energy and conflict into the narrative, as her aggressive tactics and personality clash with the existing dynamics. Her role is to be the ace pilot, but her eventual psychological decline serves as a central part of the series' darker second half, deconstructing the idea of a confident action hero. Asuka is fiercely competitive with Shinji, and while she is attracted to him, she expresses her feelings through bossiness and teasing, becoming frustrated when he does not respond to her advances. She harbors a deep hatred for Rei, seeing her as an emotionless doll who does only what she is told, which directly mirrors the trauma of her own mother preferring a doll over her. She is also infatuated with her guardian, Ryoji Kaji, whom she sees as an ideal, mature adult figure, leading to jealousy towards his on-and-off partner, Misato Katsuragi, who is also her guardian.

Asuka undergoes a dramatic and tragic character arc. Initially a top-performing pilot with high synchronization scores, her confidence begins to crack when Shinji achieves higher scores than her. A series of defeats against powerful Angels shatters her pride, and she is eventually psychically attacked by the Angel Arael, which forces her to relive her worst childhood memories, causing a complete mental breakdown. This leaves her catatonic and unable to pilot her Eva. In the film The End of Evangelion, she finally achieves a breakthrough, realizing her mother's soul was within Unit-02 all along, protecting her. She makes a triumphant and ferocious last stand against the Mass Production Evas, displaying her full, unfiltered piloting ability before being overwhelmed and killed. In the film's final scene, she reappears alongside Shinji on a beach, where her ambiguous final words and a gesture of tenderness conclude her story.

As a pilot, Asuka is exceptionally skilled, trained, and aggressive in combat, preferring direct, high-speed attacks. She boasts a high natural synchronization ability with her Eva, though not as high as Shinji's when he experiences an emotional breakdown. Her signature abilities include her expert use of Unit-02, which she considers a personal possession, and her tactical ingenuity, such as using a volcano's heat to her advantage against an Angel. Her pride in her abilities is her greatest strength, but also her fatal flaw, as her performance is directly tied to her fragile mental state.
