Description
Asuka Langley Sohryu is a central figure in Neon Genesis Evangelion, designated as the Second Child and the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02. Born on December 4, 2001, she holds American citizenship and has mixed Japanese and German heritage. Her early life was marked by profound tragedy. Her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Sohryu, was a researcher for the organization that would become NERV and participated in a contact experiment with Evangelion Unit-02. The experiment went wrong, causing Kyoko to suffer a severe mental breakdown that left her unable to recognize her own daughter. She became fixated on a doll, treating it as her child, a sight that deeply traumatized the young Asuka. The situation culminated in Kyoko's suicide, an event Asuka discovered after being chosen as a pilot, hoping to finally gain her mother's attention.

To cope with this abandonment and pain, Asuka forged a personality of extreme independence, arrogance, and aggression. She presents herself as a prodigy, having graduated from university by the age of fourteen and fluent in multiple languages. Her primary motivation is self-affirmation; she needs to be seen as the best, particularly as an Eva pilot, because piloting is the sole source of her self-worth and a way to force others to acknowledge her existence. Beneath this brash exterior lies a deeply insecure and lonely girl who fears being alone and is terrified of depending on anyone, a state psychologistically referred to as the Hedgehog's Dilemma. Her abrasive behavior, constant boasting, and need to put down others, especially her fellow pilot Shinji Ikari, are defense mechanisms designed to keep people at a distance while simultaneously craving their attention.

Her role in the story is as a foil and co-protagonist to Shinji. She arrives in Tokyo-3 full of confidence, quickly moving in with Shinji and their guardian, Misato Katsuragi. While she initially looks down on Shinji for his passivity and lack of pride in piloting, she gradually develops complex, conflicted feelings for him, ranging from attraction and jealousy to resentment when his natural piloting abilities surpass her own. She is also intensely hostile toward Rei Ayanami, seeing the stoic and obedient girl as a doll, an object that reminds her of her deepest childhood trauma. Her infatuation with the older Ryoji Kaji, her former guardian, represents a safer, unattainable crush that allows her to perform adulthood without risking real intimacy.

Asuka's character arc is a devastating downward spiral. After a series of defeats and the realization that Shinji has surpassed her, her fragile ego shatters. Her synchronization ratio with Eva-02 plummets. The final blow comes during a battle with the Angel Arael, which psychically attacks her mind, forcing her to relive her worst memories of her mother's madness and suicide in a violation known as mind rape. This trauma leaves her in a near-catatonic, comatose state, completely broken and unable to pilot again. In the film The End of Evangelion, she experiences a cathartic realization from within Eva-02, understanding that her mother's soul had always been within the unit protecting her. This allows her to wage a final, ferocious battle against the Mass Production Evas, demonstrating a regained and terrifying synchronization ability before being overcome.

As a pilot, Asuka is exceptionally talented, aggressive, and intuitive, often acting on instinct in combat. Her abilities are directly tied to her psychological state; her initial high synchronization ratio reflects her confidence, while her breakdown causes it to plummet. She is also a skilled hand-to-hand combatant in some adaptations. Her Evangelion Unit-02, the first built specifically for combat, houses the soul of her mother, creating the tragic bond that defines her abilities and her ultimate moment of recovery.
