Description
Kaji Ryouji is a man of many allegiances, whose easygoing and flirtatious exterior masks a deep-seated personal mission and a profound sense of melancholy. Physically, he is recognizable by his tall, lean build, a perennial five o'clock shadow, and his hair tied back in a short ponytail. In the series, he is always referred to by his surname, Kaji, a detail that contributes to the air of mystery that surrounds him.

His role within the story is that of a triple agent. Officially, he serves as a special inspector for the paramilitary organization NERV. However, he secretly conducts espionage for the Japanese government's Ministry of the Interior while also acting as an informant for the secretive cabal known as SEELE. Despite operating as a pawn for these powerful, competing factions, Kaji maintains his own personal agenda: to discover the truth behind the catastrophic event known as Second Impact, which devastated the world.

Kaji's background is marked by a formative trauma that explains his relentless pursuit of the truth. In the manga adaptation, which provides the most detailed account of his past, it is revealed that in the lawless aftermath of Second Impact, he was a young orphan living with his brother and a group of friends. One day, while stealing food from a military facility, he was caught and, under the threat of death, revealed the location of his group's hideout. He managed to escape, but upon returning, he found that the soldiers had already killed his brother and all his friends. Consumed by guilt, he vowed to uncover the true cause of Second Impact, believing that doing so would serve as a form of atonement for his betrayal.

In terms of personality, Kaji presents a stark contrast between his public and private selves. On the surface, he is relaxed, jovial, and effortlessly charming, often making unabashedly flirtatious comments to his female colleagues, which frequently irritates his former lover, Misato Katsuragi. He remains cool and composed even during crises, maintaining a detached and sometimes ironic sense of humor. Underneath this laid-back persona, however, he is a deeply introspective and melancholic individual who questions his own capacity for sincerity and genuine love. His moments of greatest sincerity occur during his philosophically-minded conversations with the young pilot Shinji Ikari and in his rare, emotionally honest exchanges with Misato.

His key relationships are central to his role in the narrative. His most significant bond is with Misato Katsuragi, the operations director at NERV. The two were lovers during their university days, but their relationship ended before the series begins. They are reunited when Kaji arrives in Tokyo-3, escorting the pilot Asuka Langley Soryu and the Eva Unit-02. Their rekindled relationship is complex, marked by playful bickering and a deep, unresolved history. Misato admits she broke up with him because he reminded her too much of her father, yet they eventually rekindle their romance. Kaji shares a more paternal, guiding relationship with Shinji, offering the boy worldly advice, encouraging him to think for himself, and subtly helping him understand the nature of social dynamics and responsibility. In contrast, the teenage Asuka openly crushes on him, a pursuit he handles with cool and repeated deflection, never taking her romantic advances seriously while still acting as a former guardian.

Throughout the story, Kaji uses his position to move key players and information into place. He is responsible for delivering the embryonic First Angel, Adam, to NERV commander Gendo Ikari, and he later secretly takes Misato to the deepest level of NERV headquarters to show her the entity known as Lilith, which the organization has misled others into believing is Adam. He often cultivates a small patch of watermelons near NERV headquarters, a seemingly incongruous hobby that offers a glimpse of his desire for peace and normalcy.

Kaji develops from a seemingly duplicitous spy into a character defined by his own principles. He openly defies SEELE by kidnapping and later rescuing the deputy commander, Kozo Fuyutsuki, fully aware that such an act of rebellion would cost him his life. In his final act, he provides Misato with a data capsule containing the secrets of NERV and SEELE, leaving her a farewell message on her phone before his death. Kaji is ultimately killed by an unknown assailant, implied to be an agent acting on behalf of those he has betrayed. In his final moments, he faces his death with the same resigned composure that defined his life. While he has no special combat abilities or superhuman powers, Kaji's true talent lies in his intelligence, his network of contacts, and his ability to operate independently within a system of immense conspiracy and danger to pursue a personal truth.
