Description
Ryoji Kaji is a fictional character known for his easygoing smile, perpetual stubble, and ponytail. Employed by the special agency NERV as a special inspector, he is always referred to by his surname and presents the image of a relaxed, carefree individual who never seems to lose his cool, even in times of crisis.
Beneath this affable exterior, Kaji leads a complex and dangerous life as a triple agent. His true motivations are not strictly tied to any single organization, as he secretly investigates NERV for the Japanese Ministry of the Interior while also taking orders from the secret society SEELE and acting on behalf of NERV's commander, Gendo Ikari. His primary, personal goal is to uncover the truth behind the mysterious events known as Second Impact and the organizations manipulating the world from the shadows.
Kaji has a significant personal history with Misato Katsuragi, as the two were lovers during their college years. Their relationship had long ended before the events of the story, and their reunion is marked by a familiar pattern of flirting and bickering, with Kaji teasing Misato and her often deflecting his advances. His flirtatious nature extends to other female colleagues, a trait that seems to be part of his playful public persona rather than a sign of genuine romantic interest.
Despite his irresponsible facade, Kaji displays considerable worldly wisdom and acts as a mentor and father figure to the younger pilots, particularly Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley Soryu. He offers Shinji contemplative advice about human nature and personal responsibility, encouraging him to make his own choices. Asuka is openly infatuated with him, but Kaji coolly and repeatedly deflects her advances, believing her to be too young. Hinting at a deeper melancholy, Kaji privately doubts his own capacity for sincere emotion and love, with his most genuine moments occurring during philosophical discussions with Shinji and in his final conversations with Misato.
As the story progresses, Kaji's actions become increasingly decisive. He follows SEELE's orders to kidnap Deputy Commander Kozo Fuyutsuki but later defies them by rescuing him. Aware that his actions will likely cost him his life, he gives Misato a capsule containing crucial data on the Human Instrumentality Project as a final gift and leaves her a farewell message. Shortly after, Kaji is confronted by an unknown assailant and is shot and killed. While his killer's identity remains ambiguous in the anime, described as a third party working for SEELE or NERV's intelligence division, his death is a pivotal moment that provides Misato with the truth she needs to move forward. An expanded backstory in the manga adaptation reveals that Kaji carries profound guilt from his childhood in the chaotic aftermath of Second Impact, when he was forced to betray his younger brother and friends to survive.
