Description
Guin Sard Rhineford is a central character from the anime Turn A Gundam. He is the young lord of the Inglessa dominion, one of the territories on Earth, and the grandson of its ruler, Lord Messer Rhineford. At just nineteen years old, Guin becomes the key figurehead of the Inglessa Militia, taking on a leadership role that places him at the forefront of the conflict between Earth and the returning lunar population known as the Moonrace.

Guin’s primary motivation is the advancement of Earth’s civilization. He dreams of sparking a new industrial revolution to modernize his world, which he sees as backward and stagnant. To achieve this, he is not only willing but eager to use the advanced technology possessed by the Moonrace. Prior to the series' main events, he secretly establishes contact with the Moonrace, hoping to negotiate a peaceful exchange of knowledge for land. This ambition is the driving force behind nearly all of his actions, from his political maneuvering to his military strategies.

In terms of personality, Guin is intelligent, charming, and politically astute. He is a natural leader who presents himself as a progressive and enlightened noble, genuinely concerned for the future of his people and his planet. However, this idealism is tempered by a deep-seated ambition and a ruthless pragmatism. He is capable of manipulating others and making cold, calculated decisions to serve his goals. This duality makes him a complex figure; his dream of an industrial revolution for Earth is not inherently wrong, but his methods and ultimate obsession with power lead him down a dark path.

Throughout the story, Guin’s role evolves significantly. At first, he is the principal leader of the Earth resistance, organizing the militia and handling diplomacy with the Diana Counter, the Moonrace’s advance force. After his capital city of Nocis is destroyed in an attack, he loses his immediate power base and is forced to flee. He later allies with the militia of the neighboring Luzianna province, led by the capable Lily Borjarno, using their resources to stage a comeback and commandeering the ancient battleship Willgem to travel to the Moon.

It is on the Moon that Guin undergoes his most significant development. He witnesses a recording of the Dark History, the forgotten chronicle of humanity’s past wars and space-faring civilizations. Instead of a cautionary tale, Guin sees in this history a validation of his ambitions and a source of even greater power. Corrupted by this knowledge, he betrays his allies, steals Dark History data, and makes a pact with the militant and charismatic warlord Gym Ghingham. His goal shifts from a collaborative industrial revolution to seizing control of Earth’s future for himself.

Guin’s key relationships are central to his character arc. His most complex relationship is with Loran Cehack, a Moonrace spy who becomes the pilot of the Turn A Gundam and Guin’s most powerful asset. Guin develops a deep, possessive attachment to Loran, whom he renames Laura and often dresses in women’s clothing. This behavior suggests a desire to control and reshape Loran into something that fits Guin’s personal vision, mirroring his larger desire to reshape the world. His relationship with Lily Borjarno is one of political convenience and mutual respect, though he ultimately fails to match her principled leadership. His alliance with Gym Ghingnam is one of shared ambition, but it is built on mutual distrust and ultimately leads to his downfall.

As for notable abilities, Guin is not a frontline fighter or a mobile suit pilot. His talents lie entirely in the fields of politics, economics, and strategy. He is a skilled negotiator and an effective organizer, capable of galvanizing people to his cause and managing large-scale projects. He also displays a surprising degree of physical capability, proving adept at driving and handling firearms in high-pressure situations. By the end of the series, his ambitions collapse. The Willgem is crippled in battle, his crew abandons him, and he loses his bid for power. He survives the final conflict and, having lost everything, departs into exile on a boat with the young Merrybell Gadget, a melancholic end for a man who once sought to reshape the world in his own image.
