Description
Poe Aijee is a female soldier of the Dianna Counter, the military force serving the Queen of the Moonrace, in the anime Turn A Gundam. She is twenty years old and begins the story as a second lieutenant, later being promoted to first lieutenant. She has short black hair and a boyish, neat appearance, with a tough and competitive manner that contrasts sharply with her extreme emotional fragility.
Her most defining trait is her tears. She is a compulsive crybaby who bursts into hysterical weeping whenever things go wrong, especially after failed missions. The series treats this as a recurring running gag, and her tearfulness is even referenced in an episode title that calls her the crying child Poe. Beneath the crying, however, she is stubborn and proud, and she takes her duties seriously, though her judgment is easily overwhelmed by emotion. She is reckless in battle, often attacking without thinking about the consequences of her actions.
Poe is a reasonably skilled mobile suit pilot, but her temperament makes her a poor fit for the discipline expected of a soldier. As a Wodom pilot, she descends to Earth with the first return fleet of the Dianna Counter. At the very beginning of the Earth return operation, she has been ordered not to open fire, but when the Earth Militia's aircraft repeatedly harass her, she loses her composure and fires a large beam cannon, destroying part of the town. This impulsive act awakens the Turn A Gundam and effectively triggers the outbreak of the war. Throughout the early story, she repeatedly challenges the Turn A, which she insists on calling the mustache machine, and is decisively defeated every time. She regularly returns from battle in tears, and her repeated failures weigh on her, especially because her superior, Phil Ackman, holds her accountable afterward.
Poe works directly under Phil Ackman and becomes one of his trusted subordinates. When Phil turns against Queen Dianna Soreil and launches a coup, Poe follows him, despite the deep loyalty to Dianna that is ingrained in her as a Moonrace soldier. She takes part in the seizure of the Soleil and the scheme to establish a new republic. During this period she is torn between the vows of loyalty she made to Dianna and the orders of Phil, and this inner conflict brings her to tears. When Dianna descends to Earth again, however, Poe returns to her service and weeps tears of joy at the queen's return. Her relationship with Harry Ord, the captain of Dianna's personal guard, is initially hostile; the two argue constantly and even clash on the battlefield, but by the end of the story she has grown enough to fight alongside him, bravely engaging the Turn X in close combat.
Her emotional instability nearly causes a catastrophe at one point, when she becomes furious at a comrade who refuses to surrender nuclear warheads and keeps firing beams at the weapon for a long time, ignoring repeated warnings that this could set off a massive explosion. Later in the story, however, her combat experience shows signs of maturing her into a more reliable soldier.
In the latter half of the series, Poe pilots a SUMO mobile suit. In the original novel version of the story, she is depicted as Phil's lover, while in the anime proper their relationship is that of a loyal subordinate and her superior. After the war ends, she becomes an assistant to the engineer Sid Munzer and devotes herself to excavating Mountain Cycles, trading her soldier's life for a peaceful new occupation.
