Description
Mamoru Uchida, who uses the alias Me-Mania, is a supporting character and antagonist in the psychological thriller anime Perfect Blue. He is introduced as one of the most devoted fans of pop idol Mima Kirigoe, but his admiration quickly reveals itself as an obsessive and possessive fixation. He is a tall, lanky man with a gaunt appearance, sunken cheeks, a prominent hooked nose, and messy shoulder-length black hair. His personality is defined by an intense, possessive adoration for Mima specifically in her pure pop-idol persona. When Mima announces her retirement from singing to pursue a serious acting career, Me-Mania feels betrayed and deeply unsettled by this change, perceiving it as a corruption of the image he idealizes. His core motivation stems from a desire to preserve and control the innocent fantasy he has constructed around her, leading him to stalk her relentlessly and monitor her every move. He becomes a regular visitor of a website called Mima's Room, a blog that details Mima's private life, which deepens his delusional connection to her. His role in the story is that of a tangible threat, a physical stalker whose escalating presence contributes to Mima's growing paranoia and psychological unraveling. He operates largely as a lone, menacing figure, but he is also manipulated by another character, Rumi Hidaka, who poses as the true Mima online and sends him instructions to eliminate those who are "corrupting" her image. Acting on these orders, he targets various people involved in Mima's new career, believing he is carrying out the will of the real Mima. His key relationship is with Mima herself, whom he views not as a person but as an object of worship; he cannot reconcile the real woman with the idol he has built in his mind. His development is minimal as a character, as he remains a static, driven force of obsession throughout the film, but his trajectory culminates in a direct violent confrontation with Mima. He corners her after the filming of her drama and attempts to rape and kill her, believing she is an impostor, but Mima bludgeons him with a hammer and escapes. He is later killed by Rumi, who discards him as a failed tool. His notable abilities are limited to his relentless stalking and his capacity for violence, but his most defining trait is his unshakable delusion and his willingness to act on the instructions of the false idol he believes in. He embodies the dangerous, consuming side of celebrity worship and the refusal to accept an idol's autonomy.
