Description
Prinzessin Serenity is a central figure in the Sailor Moon universe, introduced as the princess of the Silver Millennium, a long era of peace and prosperity that once thrived on the Moon. She is the daughter of Queen Serenity, the ruler of the Moon Kingdom, and the rightful heir to its throne. In her past life, she was known for a gentle and compassionate nature, much like the girl she would later be reborn as. She loved spending time with her friends and with the boy she loved, was known to be something of a crybaby, and often shirked her studies in favor of playing and goofing off. Despite this carefree side, she carried herself with the grace expected of a royal princess. Her name is derived from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, who in mythology fell in love with a young man from Earth.

Princess Serenity often visited Earth in secret to see its real greenery, even though such journeys were forbidden. On one of these visits, she met Prince Endymion, the crown prince of Earth, and the two fell deeply in love, despite the tense relationship between the people of the Moon and the people of Earth. Endymion would sometimes travel to the Moon to visit her, and their bond grew into a timeless romance. This love attracted the jealousy of Queen Beryl of the Dark Kingdom, who, driven by envy and a thirst for power, orchestrated a devastating attack on the Moon Kingdom. During the resulting conflict, Endymion was killed, and a grief-stricken Serenity, overwhelmed by loss, died after unleashing the immense power of the Silver Crystal in her despair.

In her final act, Queen Serenity used the Silver Crystal to banish the forces of darkness and send the souls of the Moon Kingdom's inhabitants to Earth, where they would be reborn in the future. Princess Serenity was thus reincarnated in the twentieth century as Usagi Tsukino, a clumsy and cheerful schoolgirl who would eventually awaken as Sailor Moon. Her beloved Endymion was reborn as Mamoru Chiba, who fights alongside her as Tuxedo Mask, and her four closest guardians were reborn as Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus.

Princess Serenity's role in the story is closely tied to the identity and destiny of Sailor Moon. Early in the series, Usagi and her friends search for the Moon Princess without realizing that Usagi herself is that princess. When her true identity is revealed, the memories of the Silver Millennium resurface, giving deeper meaning to the bonds between the Sailor Guardians and to Usagi's connection with Mamoru. Serenity's story establishes the series' central themes of love that transcends time, sacrifice, and rebirth. Her influence continues throughout the series, and at the end of Sailor Moon SuperS, Sailor Moon transforms into Princess Serenity when she leaps to save Sailor Chibi Moon, receiving winged power from Pegasus that allows both of them to fly.

Her motivations are rooted in love and protection. As Princess Serenity, she loved Endymion above all else, and that devotion carried over into her reincarnated life, where Usagi's determination to protect the people she cares about mirrors Serenity's own heart. The tragedy of her past life also shapes her character, as the loss of her kingdom, her mother, and her beloved left a deep emotional mark, and her rebirth represents both a second chance and a burden of memory. In some versions of the story, her grief is explored more directly, showing her as initially kind and peaceful but becoming colder, more distant, and even selfish after the destruction of the Moon Kingdom and the Earth Kingdom.

In terms of appearance, Princess Serenity shares her features with Usagi: blue eyes, long blonde hair styled in two buns with flowing pigtails, and a golden crescent moon on her forehead that marks her status as a member of the royal family of the Silver Millennium. Her abilities are closely connected to the Silver Crystal, one of the most powerful artifacts in the Sailor Moon universe, which once protected the peace between the Moon and Earth. She is able to channel the crystal's energy, and this power, awakened in moments of extreme emotion, is capable of both immense destruction and profound healing. As the past incarnation of Sailor Moon, her legacy also extends into the future, where she is destined to become Neo Queen Serenity, the ruler of a peaceful Crystal Tokyo in the thirtieth century.

Her key relationships define her story. Queen Serenity is her mother, whose love led her to sacrifice her own life for her daughter's rebirth. Prince Endymion is her destined love, their bond surviving death and reincarnation across centuries. The Sailor Guardians served as her protectors and closest friends in the Moon Kingdom, and that loyalty continues in their reincarnated forms. These relationships give Princess Serenity her emotional depth, transforming her from a distant historical figure into the heart of the entire saga.
