Description
Minako Aino, better known as Sailor Venus, is a central character in the Sailor Moon series and the protagonist of its prequel manga, Codename: Sailor V. As the civilian identity of Sailor Venus, she is the first Sailor Guardian to awaken her powers, even before the series' main protagonist, Usagi Tsukino. Her birthday is October 22, making her a Libra, and her associated colors are gold and orange.

Minako is introduced as a cheerful, athletic, and friendly teenager. She is depicted as someone who is incredibly boy-crazy and dreams of becoming a famous pop idol, often chasing celebrities and attending auditions. She is also very confident, sometimes to the point of overconfidence, and her enthusiasm frequently leads to slapstick humor. However, this energetic exterior masks a deeply resilient and intelligent individual. Because she has been fighting evil for longer than any of her comrades, she possesses a strong sense of duty and can become very serious and focused when the situation demands it. In the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal, her leadership qualities and strategic mind are more prominent, showing her to be a reliable and decisive figure. In the original anime, her sillier traits are amplified, and she is known for mixing up common proverbs, but she retains her core of unwavering determination.

Her primary motivation is to protect Princess Serenity, the Moon Princess, and the Earth from various threats. As the leader of the Inner Sailor Guardians, she feels a profound responsibility for the safety of her team and their mission. While she loves romance and dreams of finding a boyfriend, her sense of duty almost always takes precedence, leading her to sacrifice personal happiness for the greater good. She also holds a strong desire to become an idol singer, a dream she pursues alongside her duties as a guardian.

Minako's role in the story is unique. She operates under the alias Sailor V for a significant period before formally joining Usagi and the others. In the first major story arc, she deliberately pretends to be the Moon Princess to act as a decoy, protecting the real princess, Usagi, from the enemy. Once the team is united, she serves as the de facto leader of the Inner Guardians, coordinating their attacks and strategies. Her vast experience makes her a crucial asset in battle and a mentor figure, even to the other guardians.

Her most important relationship is with her advisor and companion, the white cat Artemis, who lives with her and guides her mission. She shares a deep bond of friendship and trust with Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon), whom she is sworn to protect. While she gets along with all the guardians, she has a particularly notable friendship with Rei Hino (Sailor Mars); in the live-action series, this relationship is much more central, with Minako personally training Rei to be a leader and confiding in her about her terminal illness. In the manga and original anime, she is often depicted as a close friend and partner-in-crime to Rei, sharing a rivalry that is both competitive and affectionate.

Minako undergoes notable development throughout the series. Initially, she is burdened by her solo mission and the heavy memories of her past life, making her more solemn and distant. After meeting the other guardians and fulfilling her duty to find the princess, she is able to relax and embrace her more carefree, goofy personality. In the live-action adaptation, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, her character arc is drastically different and more tragic, as she is depicted as a famous idol suffering from a terminal illness, leading a solemn, isolated life while selflessly dedicating her remaining time to her mission.

As Sailor Venus, her notable abilities are associated with love and light. Her primary attacks include the Crescent Beam, a beam of light fired from her finger, and the Venus Love-Me Chain, a magical chain she uses to restrain or strike enemies. As she gains more power, she learns advanced techniques like Venus Love and Beauty Shock. She is also highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat and is physically very strong, capable of wielding a sword with ease. Her transformation phrases often begin with Venus Power, Make Up! As the leader of the Sailor Guardians, she is the strategist and field commander, second only to Sailor Moon herself.
