Description
Mizuno Ami is the civilian identity of Sailor Mercury, the second Sailor Guardian to be recruited by Sailor Moon. She is a fourteen-year-old student at Azabu Juuban Junior High, where she is known as the top student in her class, rumored to have an IQ of three hundred. Ami lives with her mother, a busy doctor, while her father, a painter, left the family when she was young; her parents are divorced. Before meeting Usagi Tsukino, Ami was a lonely and intensely studious girl, her shyness often mistaken for snobbery by her peers. Usagi’s genuine kindness helps her open up, and their friendship becomes the cornerstone of her personal growth. Ami’s primary motivation is to become a doctor like her mother, though she also deeply values her bonds with the other Sailor Guardians and the mission to protect the world.

She serves as the strategist and analytical center of the team, using her genius-level intellect to assess threats and devise battle plans. Her Sailor Guardian powers are tied to water and ice, and she wields a compact supercomputer and a visor that allow her to analyze enemy weaknesses and environmental data. Her signature early attack, Shabon Spray, creates a dense fog that obscures vision and can be used to freeze or stun opponents. Later she gains more powerful abilities such as Shine Aqua Illusion and Mercury Aqua Rhapsody. Her role in the story is that of the reliable voice of reason, often mediating disputes between the more hot-headed members and supporting Sailor Moon with tactical advice.

Ami’s key relationships include her deep friendship with Usagi, who helped her overcome her loneliness, and her camaraderie with the other Inner Guardians: Rei, Makoto, and Minako. She also shares a brief, unresolved romantic connection with a classmate named Ryo Urawa, who possesses psychic abilities. Throughout the series, Ami demonstrates notable personal development. Initially defined by her obsession with academic perfection and the approval of her mother, she gradually learns to balance her studies with her duties as a guardian and to trust in her friends. An episode in the second season presents her with a scholarship to study medicine in Germany, and she ultimately chooses to remain in Japan to continue fighting alongside the team, showing that her friendships have become her highest priority. Her abilities extend beyond combat: she is an excellent swimmer, a skilled chess player, enjoys reading romance novels in private, and has a talent for composing lyrics. Despite her intense focus, she possesses a gentle, caring nature and a subtle sense of humor, and she often serves as the moral anchor of the group.
