Description
Königin Perilia, known in the original Japanese version as Queen Beryl, is the primary antagonist of the first story arc in the anime Sailor Moon. Her background is rooted in the ancient era of the Silver Millennium, when she was a human noblewoman living on Earth. During that time, she fell deeply in love with Prince Endymion, the prince of Earth, but her love was not returned; Endymion instead loved Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. Overcome by jealousy and heartbreak, Perilia was approached and corrupted by the dark entity Queen Metallia, who granted her power in exchange for loyalty. Using this power, Perilia orchestrated a war between Earth and the Moon Kingdom, leading to the destruction of the Silver Millennium. She was ultimately sealed away alongside Metallia by Queen Serenity, falling into a centuries-long sleep.

In the modern era, Perilia reawakens as the ruler of the Dark Kingdom, a subterranean realm located near the North Pole. Her personality is marked by ruthlessness, impatience, and a single-minded obsession with obtaining the Legendary Silver Crystal and defeating the reincarnated Sailor Guardians. She is driven by a possessive love for Endymion, whom she kidnaps and brainwashes into serving her as Tuxedo Mask, hoping to force him to kill Princess Serenity. Despite her cruelty, her motivations are rooted in tragedy: she never truly moved past her unrequited love and is willing to sacrifice everything, including her own humanity, to possess Endymion and reclaim the power she believes is hers.

Perilia’s role in the story is that of the mastermind behind the early attacks on Tokyo. She commands four generals—Jedite, Neflite, Zoisite, and Kunzite—whom she dispatches to harvest human energy and search for the Silver Crystal. She also employs various youma (monsters) to carry out her plans. As the series progresses, she becomes increasingly desperate and violent when her subordinates fail, punishing or killing them when they disobey. After her generals are defeated, she takes direct action, merging with Queen Metallia to become Super Perilia, a more powerful and monstrous form. In this state, she nearly destroys the Sailor Guardians, but is ultimately defeated when Sailor Moon transforms into Princess Serenity and uses the power of the Silver Crystal to vanquish both Perilia and Metallia.

Key relationships in her story include her unreciprocated love for Prince Endymion, which fuels her hatred for Princess Serenity. She holds a transactional alliance with Queen Metallia, the source of her power, but is ultimately used as a vessel. Her relationship with her four generals is authoritarian; she considers them expendable tools and shows no loyalty. With Sailor Moon (the reincarnation of Princess Serenity), she is bitterly antagonistic, viewing her as a rival who must be eliminated.

Character development in the anime is limited; Perilia remains largely static, consumed by her obsession and rage. However, glimpses of her tragic past reveal that she was once a human with genuine feelings, making her fall into evil a cautionary tale about the destructive nature of jealousy and unrequited love. She does not experience redemption or remorse; instead, she becomes more entrenched in her villainy until her final defeat.

Notable abilities include immense magical power, which she primarily uses to channel life energy harvested by her servants to Queen Metallia. She can cast powerful spells, create barriers, and summon youma. After merging with Metallia, she gains enhanced strength, flight, and the ability to fire destructive energy blasts. She also possesses the ability to brainwash others, as demonstrated with Endymion. Her cunning and strategic mind make her a formidable opponent despite her eventual downfall.
