Description
Jadiete, also sometimes romanized as Jadeite, is a character from the Sailor Moon series, serving as the first of the four Shitennou, or Four Heavenly Kings, to appear. As a general serving under Queen Beryl of the Dark Kingdom, he has the appearance of a handsome young man, typically depicted with blonde hair and blue eyes, and wears the standard grey and red uniform of his rank. He is often noted to be around eighteen years old, making him one of the youngest among the generals.

In terms of personality, Jadiete is characterized by his high level of confidence and pride. He is a strategic thinker who often takes a hands-on approach to his missions, believing in his own abilities above all else. This self-assuredness, however, frequently leads him to underestimate his opponents, particularly the Sailor Guardians. He is a master of disguise, adopting numerous human personas such as a radio host, gym instructor, and shrine caretaker to get close to his targets. His primary motivation is to serve Queen Beryl and the entity Queen Metalia by gathering human life energy to awaken the latter from her slumber. Unlike later generals who focus on specific individuals, Jadiete's schemes are designed to drain energy from large crowds of people simultaneously.

Within the story, Jadiete acts as the first major recurring antagonist that the Sailor Guardians must overcome. His role is to spearhead the Dark Kingdom's operations on Earth, setting up various traps and creating monsters known as Youma to do his bidding. His schemes are consistently thwarted by Sailor Moon, with the aid of Sailor Mercury and later Sailor Mars, leading to a series of failures. Key relationships define his position; he is fiercely loyal to Queen Beryl, whom he constantly seeks to impress, and his repeated failures eventually exhaust her patience. He also has a brief working relationship with a Youma named Thetis, who has affection for him and volunteers to help with one of his plans, a decision that contributes to his downfall.

Jadiete's development varies across different versions of the story. In the original 1990s anime, he shows little personal growth, remaining confident until the end. When he is given an ultimatum by Queen Beryl to finally destroy the Sailor Guardians or face eternal sleep, he lures them to an airport for a final confrontation. After failing to defeat them, he returns to the Dark Kingdom badly beaten. Before he can reveal the Sailor Guardians' true identities, Queen Beryl sentences him to "Eternal Sleep," freezing him in a crystal and banishing him into darkness. In the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal continuity, his story is more nuanced, as he is revealed to be under a spell. In these versions, he originally served Prince Endymion before being manipulated by Queen Beryl, and he has a past-life connection to Sailor Mars.

Regarding notable abilities, Jadiete possesses a range of supernatural powers. He has demonstrated telekinesis, which he uses to manipulate large objects such as airplanes and to create protective barriers. He can perform powerful illusions, such as creating a giant projection of himself over Tokyo or making the city appear to be on fire. As a master of disguise, he can alter his appearance at will. He also shares common abilities with the other Shitennou, including teleportation, the power to create Youma from inanimate materials like clay, and the capacity to drain life energy from humans.
