Description
Neflyte, also known in some adaptations as Nephrite, is the second of the Four Kings of Heaven, or Shitennou, who serve the Dark Kingdom under Queen Beryl. Named after a type of jade, he takes over the role of gathering energy for Queen Beryl after the first king, Jadeite, is banished. In the original anime, Neflyte adopts the human alias Masato Sanjouin, presenting himself as a wealthy businessman who drives a red Ferrari, and he operates from an abandoned house.
Neflyte's personality is marked by arrogance and overconfidence. He is a stalwart believer in the astrological power of the stars and criticizes Jadeite's earlier approach of targeting many people at once. Instead, Neflyte prefers to select a single individual, using his knowledge of celestial rhythms to identify those reaching their maximum energy potential. He marks his victims and releases a monster from a possessed object to drain their energy at the peak moment.
His primary motivation is to successfully gather energy for the Dark Kingdom and later to locate the Silver Crystal, the Ginzuishou. He develops a Black Crystal homing device to track it, which unexpectedly reacts to the presence of Naru Osaka, a girl who has fallen in love with his human persona. Over time, Neflyte's manipulative facade begins to crack as he genuinely reciprocates Naru's feelings, a development that makes him vulnerable. This growing affection leads to a conflict with his rival Zoisite, who relentlessly taunts and schemes against him. Zoisite's minions eventually attack Neflyte and kidnap Naru. Neflyte rescues her, admitting his feelings, but is mortally wounded protecting her. He dies in Naru's arms, expressing regret for his deceptions.
Key relationships include his antagonistic rivalry with Zoisite, his subordinate role to Queen Beryl, and his unexpected emotional bond with Naru. He also experiences moments of déjà vu with Mamoru Chiba, hinting at a past connection from the Silver Millennium. In the anime, he is the first villain to undergo a form of redemption through love, though it costs him his life. The Sailor Senshi, particularly Sailor Moon and Sailor Jupiter, are his recurring adversaries, though his death is ultimately caused by Zoisite's forces.
Notable abilities include the power to read astrological rhythms to identify optimal victims, the creation of the Black Crystal for tracking the Silver Crystal, and the use of a shadow-based technique to manipulate objects and drain energy. He also demonstrates superhuman physical capabilities, such as leaping great distances. His signature attack in the anime is the Starlight Attack. In the manga, Neflyte's role is different: he is driven by a desire to avenge Jadeite and is killed early on by Sailor Jupiter. Across both versions, he is defined by his emotional nature, his tactical shift from broad to focused energy collection, and his tragic arc from a confident general to a redeemed but fallen figure.
