Description
Jedite, also known as Jadeite, is a character who serves as the first primary antagonist encountered by the Sailor Guardians. His name is derived from the mineral jadeite. He is one of the four Shitennou, or heavenly kings, who are the highest-ranking generals under the command of Queen Beryl of the Dark Kingdom. His role in the narrative is to serve as the initial, persistent threat that the newly awakened Sailor Moon and her allies must overcome, setting the stage for the larger conflict.

In terms of his background, Jedite is a general tasked with gathering human life energy, known as energy, to revive the Dark Kingdom's master, Queen Metalia. He commands various monsters called youma to carry out his plans. Across different versions of the story, his past varies. In the original manga and the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot, Jedite is revealed to have been one of the four guardians of Prince Endymion, the ruler of Earth, in a previous life before being reawakened and brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom. In the original 1990s anime, this connection is not present, and he is presented purely as a loyal subject of Queen Beryl. The live-action series, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, also incorporates his past loyalty to Prince Endymion.

Jedite’s personality is marked by a strong sense of confidence and pride. He often takes a hands-on approach to his schemes, believing his methods to be superior and underestimating his opponents, particularly the Sailor Guardians whom he initially dismisses. In the original anime, this arrogance is occasionally accompanied by a dismissive attitude towards women. He is highly charismatic, using his charm and good looks to maintain his many human disguises. He is also shown to be the most subservient and loyal of the four generals to Queen Beryl, diligently reporting his plans and accepting her punishments for his failures with a resolve to do better.

His motivations are primarily driven by a desire to fulfill his mission for the Dark Kingdom. He seeks Queen Beryl's approval and wishes to prove his competence by successfully harvesting energy and eliminating the Sailor Guardians. In the manga and Crystal versions, his underlying motivation becomes one of redemption, as he is freed from brainwashing and remembers his true duty to Prince Endymion before his final demise. A key relationship is his dynamic with Queen Beryl, whom he serves with a fearful devotion. He also has a notable but brief connection with Thetis, a powerful youma in the original anime who volunteers to help him out of affection, a decision that ultimately leads to her destruction and contributes to Jedite’s downfall. In the manga and Crystal continuity, a past romantic connection with Sailor Mars is implied or stated, dating back to their lives in the Silver Millennium. He also interacts with the other Shitennou; in the manga, Nephrite mocks him but later vows revenge after his death, while in Crystal they fight alongside one another.

Jedite’s development across the series is primarily defined by his ultimate fate. He begins as a formidable and creative planner but experiences a series of escalating failures at the hands of the Sailor Guardians. This leads to a final, desperate confrontation where he is defeated. His character arc concludes with his severe punishment. In the original anime, he is condemned to Eternal Sleep by Queen Beryl, frozen in a crystal and cast into darkness for his repeated failures, even as he tries to report the Guardians' true identities. In the manga, he is incinerated by Sailor Mars and turned into a skeleton, later being briefly revived only to turn into the stone he is named after. In Sailor Moon Crystal, he is killed by Queen Metalia herself. This trajectory establishes him not as a character who reforms, but as a tragic figure whose ambition and loyalty lead to a severe and final end.

Jedite possesses a range of notable supernatural abilities. He is a master of disguise, frequently taking on human personas to execute his plans. He has powerful telekinetic abilities, which he uses to control large objects like aircraft and to deflect attacks, such as Sailor Moon's Moon Tiara. He can generate potent illusions, create barriers for protection, teleport himself across distances, and fire energy bolts. He is also capable of draining human life force and channeling it back to the Dark Kingdom. In the live-action series, he is depicted as a skilled hand-to-hand combatant who wields twin daggers.
